Page 2 / 2 (Jer 44:12–Zep 3:18)
“And I will take away the remnant of Judah, those who have set their face to go to the land of Egypt to stay there. All of them will meet their end in the land of Egypt. They will fall by the sword; they will meet their end by famine. From the least to the greatest, they will die by the sword and by famine. Then they will become an example for cursing, scorn, execration, and disgrace.
“For by myself I have sworn” — this is the LORD’s declaration — “Bozrah[fn] will become a desolation, a disgrace, a ruin, and an example for cursing, and all its surrounding cities will become ruins forever.”
We are ashamed
because we have heard insults.
Humiliation covers our faces
because foreigners have entered
the holy places of the LORD’s temple.
Let him offer his cheek
to the one who would strike him;
let him be filled with disgrace.
“I will make you a ruin and a disgrace among the nations around you, in the sight of everyone who passes by.
“So you[fn] will be a disgrace and a taunt, a warning and a horror, to the nations around you when I execute judgments against you in anger, wrath, and furious rebukes. I, the LORD, have spoken.
“before your wickedness was exposed? It was like the time you were scorned by the daughters of Aram[fn] and all those around her, and by the daughters of the Philistines — those who treated you with contempt from every side.
“Now you, son of man, prophesy, and say, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says concerning the Ammonites and their contempt.’ You are to proclaim,
‘A sword! A sword
is drawn for slaughter,
polished to consume, to flash like lightning.
I will no longer allow the insults of the nations to be heard against you, and you will not have to endure the reproach of the peoples anymore; you will no longer cause your nation to stumble.[fn] This is the declaration of the Lord GOD.’ ”
“I will also make the fruit of the trees and the produce of the field plentiful, so that you will no longer experience reproach among the nations on account of famine.
Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts, may your anger and wrath turn away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain; for because of our sins and the iniquities of our ancestors, Jerusalem and your people have become an object of ridicule to all those around us.
“Then he will turn his attention to the coasts and islands[fn] and capture many. But a commander will put an end to his taunting; instead, he will turn his taunts against him.
Many who sleep in the dust
of the earth will awake,
some to eternal life,
and some to disgrace and eternal contempt.
Ephraim has provoked bitter anger,
so his Lord will leave his bloodguilt on him
and repay him for his contempt.
Let the priests, the LORD’s ministers,
weep between the portico and the altar.
Let them say,
“Have pity on your people, LORD,
and do not make your inheritance a disgrace,
an object of scorn among the nations.
Why should it be said among the peoples,
‘Where is their God? ’ ”
The LORD answered his people:
Look, I am about to send you
grain, new wine, and fresh oil.
You will be satiated with them,
and I will no longer make you
a disgrace among the nations.
I have heard the taunting of Moab
and the insults of the Ammonites,
who have taunted my people
and threatened their territory.
