“I will bless her; indeed, I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she will produce nations; kings of peoples will come from her.”

And he said to him, “All right,[fn] I’ll grant your request[fn] about this matter too and will not demolish the town you mentioned.

The next day the firstborn said to the younger, “Look, I slept with my father last night. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight so you can go sleep with him and we can preserve our father’s line.”

The younger also gave birth to a son, and she named him Ben-ammi.[fn] He is the father of the Ammonites of today.

Now Abimelech had not approached her, so he said, “Lord, would you destroy a nation even though it is innocent?

“Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father though not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife.

“and I will also make a nation of the slave’s son because he is your offspring.”

Abimelech replied, “I don’t know who did this thing. You didn’t report anything to me, so I hadn’t heard about it until today.”

Now after these things Abraham was told, “Milcah also has borne sons to your brother Nahor:

His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.

“Let the girl to whom I say, ‘Please lower your water jug so that I may drink,’ and who responds, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels also’ ​— ​let her be the one you have appointed for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.”

When she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I’ll also draw water for your camels until they have had enough to drink.”[fn]

She also said to him, “We have plenty of straw and feed and a place to spend the night.”

“and who responds to me, ‘Drink, and I’ll draw water for your camels also’ ​— ​let her be the woman the LORD has appointed for my master’s son.

“She quickly lowered her jug from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels also.’ So I drank, and she also watered the camels.

Then they dug another well and quarreled over that one also, so he named it Sitnah.[fn]

He had also made some delicious food and brought it to his father. He said to his father, “Let my father get up and eat some of his son’s game, so that you may bless me.”

Isaac began to tremble uncontrollably. “Who was it then,” he said, “who hunted game and brought it to me? I ate it all before you came in, and I blessed him. Indeed, he will be blessed! ”

Esau said to his father, “Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father! ” And Esau wept loudly.[fn]

“until your brother’s rage turns away from you and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send for you and bring you back from there. Why should I lose you both in one day? ”

“Complete this week of wedding celebration, and we will also give you this younger one in return for working yet another seven years for me.”

Jacob slept with Rachel also, and indeed, he loved Rachel more than Leah. And he worked for Laban another seven years.

She conceived again, gave birth to a son, and said, “The LORD heard that I am neglected and has given me this son also.” So she named him Simeon.[fn]

Then she said, “Here is my maid Bilhah. Go sleep with her, and she’ll bear children for me[fn] so that through her I too can build a family.”

Rachel said, “God has vindicated me; yes, he has heard me and given me a son,” so she named him Dan.[fn]

Rachel said, “In my wrestlings with God,[fn] I have wrestled with my sister and won,” and she named him Naphtali.[fn]

But Leah replied to her, “Isn’t it enough that you have taken my husband? Now you also want to take my son’s mandrakes? ”

“Well then,” Rachel said, “he can sleep with you tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.”

“For you had very little before I came, but now your wealth has increased. The LORD has blessed you because of me. And now, when will I also do something for my own family? ”

“Are we not regarded by him as outsiders? For he has sold us and has certainly spent our purchase price.

When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau; he is coming to meet you ​— ​and he has four hundred men with him.”

“then tell him, ‘They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a gift sent to my lord Esau. And look, he is behind us.’ ”
