“Observe the Sabbath, for it is holy to you. Whoever profanes it must be put to death. If anyone does work on it, that person must be cut off from his people.
“You are not to sacrifice any of your children in the fire[fn] to Molech. Do not profane the name of your God; I am the LORD.
“Anyone who eats it will bear his iniquity, for he has profaned what is holy to the LORD. That person is to be cut off from his people.
“Do not debase[fn] your daughter by making her a prostitute, or the land will be prostituted and filled with depravity.
“I will turn[fn] against that man and cut him off from his people, because he gave his offspring to Molech, defiling my sanctuary and profaning my holy name.
“They are to be holy to their God and not profane the name of their God. For they present the food offerings to the LORD, the food of their God, and they must be holy.
“They are not to marry a woman defiled by prostitution.[fn] They are not to marry one divorced by her husband, for the priest is holy to his God.

You have repudiated the covenant with your servant;
you have completely dishonored his crown.[fn]
“I will act for my own sake, indeed, my own,
for how can I[fn] be defiled?
I will not give my glory to another.
Happy is the person who does this,
the son of man who holds it fast,
who keeps the Sabbath without desecrating it,
and keeps his hand from doing any evil.
“As for the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD
to minister to him, to love the name of the LORD,
and to become his servants —
all who keep the Sabbath without desecrating it
and who hold firmly to my covenant —
“I will first repay them double for their iniquity and sin because they have polluted my land. They have filled my inheritance with the carcasses of their abhorrent and detestable idols.”
“But you have changed your minds and profaned my name. Each has taken back his male and female slaves who had been set free to go wherever they wanted, and you have again forced them to be your slaves.
Without compassion the Lord has swallowed up
all the dwellings of Jacob.
In his wrath he has demolished
the fortified cities of Daughter Judah.
He brought them to the ground
and defiled the kingdom and its leaders.
I will hand these things over
to foreigners as plunder
and to the wicked of the earth as spoil,
and they will profane them.
I will turn my face from them
as they profane my treasured place.

“But I withheld my hand and acted for the sake of my name, so that it would not be profaned in the eyes of the nations in whose sight I brought them out.
“For they did not practice my ordinances but rejected my statutes and profaned my Sabbaths, and their eyes were fixed on their fathers’ idols.
“ ‘As for you, house of Israel, this is what the Lord GOD says: Go and serve your idols, each of you. But afterward you will surely listen to me, and you will no longer defile my holy name with your gifts and idols.
“You will know that I am the LORD, house of Israel, when I have dealt with you for the sake of my name rather than according to your evil ways and corrupt acts. This is the declaration of the Lord GOD.’ ”
“Her priests do violence to my instruction and profane my holy things. They make no distinction between the holy and the common, and they do not explain the difference between the clean and the unclean. They close their eyes to my Sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.
