“What can we say to my lord? ” Judah replied. “How can we plead? How can we justify ourselves? God has exposed your servants’ iniquity. We are now my lord’s slaves ​— ​both we and the one in whose possession the cup was found.”

“‘Say this to Joseph: Please forgive your brothers’ transgression and their sin ​— ​the suffering they caused you.’ Therefore, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept when their message came to him.

Your hands were not bound,

May you forgive your people

who sinned against you

and all their rebellions[fn] against you,

and may you grant them compassion

before their captors,

so that they may treat them compassionately.

“Would I lie about my case?

My wound[fn] is incurable,

though I am without transgression.”

“Teach me what I cannot see;

if I have done wrong, I won’t do it again.”

He opens their ears to correction

and tells them to repent from iniquity.

Be careful that no one lures you with riches;[fn]

do not let a large ransom[fn] lead you astray.

The[fn] thunder declares his presence;[fn]

the cattle also, the approaching storm.

LORD my God, if I have done this,

if there is injustice on my hands,

See, the wicked one is pregnant with evil,

conceives trouble, and gives birth to deceit.

His trouble comes back on his own head;

his own violence comes down on top of his head.

The LORD examines the righteous,

but he hates the wicked

and[fn] those who love violence.

You have tested my heart;

you have examined me at night.

You have tried me and found nothing evil;

I have determined that my mouth will not sin.[fn]

Do not give me over to the will of my foes,

for false witnesses rise up against me,

breathing violence.

Do not drag me away with the wicked,

with the evildoers,

who speak in friendly ways with their neighbors

while malice is in their hearts.

Like a sharpened razor,

your tongue devises destruction,

working treachery.

day and night they make the rounds on its walls.
