When Abram heard that his relative had been taken prisoner, he assembled[fn] his 318 trained men, born in his household, and they went in pursuit as far as Dan.

He took him outside and said, “Look at the sky and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” Then he said to him, “Your offspring will be that numerous.”

The angel of the LORD said to her, “I will greatly multiply your offspring, and they will be too many to count.”

“You have said, ‘I will cause you to prosper, and I will make your offspring like the sand of the sea, too numerous to be counted.’ ”

So Joseph stored up grain in such abundance ​— ​like the sand of the sea ​— ​that he stopped measuring it because it was beyond measure.

“You are to count seven[fn] complete weeks[fn] starting from the day after the Sabbath, the day you brought the sheaf of the presentation offering.

The LORD’s anger burned against Israel again, and he stirred up David against them to say, “Go, count the people of Israel and Judah.”

David’s conscience troubled him after he had taken a census of the troops. He said to the LORD, “I have sinned greatly in what I’ve done. Now, LORD, because I’ve been very foolish, please take away your servant’s guilt.”

“Your servant is among your people you have chosen, a people too many to be numbered or counted.

King Solomon and the entire congregation of Israel who had gathered around him were in front of the ark sacrificing sheep, goats, and cattle that could not be counted or numbered because there were so many.

Then Amaziah gathered Judah and assembled them according to ancestral families,[fn] according to commanders of thousands, and according to commanders of hundreds. He numbered those twenty years old or more for all Judah and Benjamin. He found there to be three hundred thousand fit young men who could serve in the army, bearing spear and shield.

King Cyrus of Persia had them brought out under the supervision of Mithredath the treasurer, who counted them out to Sheshbazzar the prince of Judah.

If only darkness had taken that night away!

He counts the number of the stars;

he gives names to all of them.

“giving wealth as an inheritance to those who love me,

and filling their treasuries.

What is crooked cannot be straightened;

what is lacking cannot be counted.

Your mind will meditate on the past terror:

“Where is the accountant?[fn]

Where is the tribute collector?[fn]

Where is the one who spied out our defenses? ”[fn]

“The flocks will again pass under the hands of the one who counts them in the cities of the hill country, the cities of the Judean foothills, the cities of the Negev, the land of Benjamin ​— ​the areas around Jerusalem and in Judah’s cities, says the LORD.
