Suddenly, a violent storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves — but Jesus kept sleeping.
When he had come to the other side, to the region of the Gadarenes,[fn] two demon-possessed men met him as they came out of the tombs. They were so violent that no one could pass that way.
“A person is worth far more than a sheep; so it is lawful to do what is good on the Sabbath.”
Then a demon-possessed man who was blind and unable to speak was brought to him. He healed him, so that the man[fn] could both speak and see.
Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, while the whole crowd stood on the shore.
“It’s the smallest of all the seeds, but when grown, it’s taller than the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the sky come and nest in its branches.”
He went to his hometown and began to teach them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?
So the crowd was amazed when they saw those unable to speak talking, the crippled restored, the lame walking, and the blind seeing, and they gave glory to the God of Israel.
The disciples said to him, “Where could we get enough bread in this desolate place to feed such a crowd? ”
“So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
“So you testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets.
“For false messiahs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.
When daybreak came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put him to death.
They were all amazed, and so they began to ask each other, “What is this? A new teaching with authority![fn] He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”
Yet he went out and began to proclaim it widely and to spread the news, with the result that Jesus could no longer enter a town openly. But he was out in deserted places, and they came to him from everywhere.
So many people gathered together that there was no more room, not even in the doorway, and he was speaking the word to them.
Immediately he got up, took the mat, and went out in front of everyone. As a result, they were all astounded and gave glory to God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this! ”
Since he had healed many, all who had diseases were pressing toward him to touch him.
Jesus entered a house, and the crowd gathered again so that they were not even able to eat.[fn]
Again he began to teach by the sea, and a very large crowd gathered around him. So he got into a boat on the sea and sat down, while the whole crowd was by the sea on the shore.
“And when sown, it comes up and grows taller than all the garden plants, and produces large branches, so that the birds of the sky can nest in its shade.”
A great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking over the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped.
Then it came out, shrieking and throwing him into terrible convulsions. The boy became like a corpse, so that many said, “He’s dead.”
They got up, drove him out of town, and brought him to the edge of the hill that their town was built on, intending to hurl him over the cliff.
So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them; they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
Meanwhile, a crowd of many thousands came together, so that they were trampling on one another. He began to say to his disciples first, “Be on your guard against the leaven[fn] of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
They watched closely and sent spies who pretended to be righteous,[fn] so that they could catch him in what he said, to hand him over to the governor’s rule and authority.
This became known to all the residents of Jerusalem, so that in their own language that field is called Hakeldama (that is, “Field of Blood”).
As a result, they would carry the sick out into the streets and lay them on cots and mats so that when Peter came by, at least his shadow might fall on some of them.
In Iconium they entered the Jewish synagogue, as usual, and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed.
They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company, and Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed off to Cyprus.
Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the jail were shaken, and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s chains came loose.
This went on for two years, so that all the residents of Asia, both Jews and Greeks, heard the word of the Lord.
so that even facecloths or aprons[fn] that had touched his skin were brought to the sick, and the diseases left them, and the evil spirits came out of them.
Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them, overpowered them all, and prevailed against them, so that they ran out of that house naked and wounded.
Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you also were put to death in relation to the law through the body of Christ so that you may belong to another. You belong to him who was raised from the dead in order that we may bear fruit for God.
But now we have been released from the law, since we have died to what held us, so that we may serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the old letter of the law.
So then, the one who resists the authority is opposing God’s command, and those who oppose it will bring judgment on themselves.
by the power of miraculous signs and wonders, and by the power of God’s Spirit. As a result, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum.[fn]
so that you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
So, then, neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.
