So her husband, Joseph, being a righteous man, and not wanting to disgrace her publicly, decided to divorce her secretly.
“If that’s how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, won’t he do much more for you — you of little faith?
“If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him.
“Anyone who is not with me is against me, and anyone who does not gather with me scatters.
“Brood of vipers! How can you speak good things when you are evil? For the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.
“how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest and ate the bread of the Presence — which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests — and also gave some to his companions? ”
In those days there was again a large crowd, and they had nothing to eat. He called the disciples and said to them,
He went into Jerusalem and into the temple. After looking around at everything, since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.
While he was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper,[fn] as he was reclining at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured it on his head.
While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, suddenly arrived. With him was a mob, with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders.
As he began his ministry, Jesus was about thirty years old and was thought to be the
son of Joseph, son of Heli,
Jesus answered them, “Haven’t you read what David and those who were with him did when he was hungry —
A woman suffering from bleeding for twelve years, who had spent all she had on doctors[fn] and yet could not be healed by any,
“Anyone who is not with me is against me, and anyone who does not gather with me scatters.
“If that’s how God clothes the grass, which is in the field today and is thrown into the furnace tomorrow, how much more will he do for you — you of little faith?
“Satan has bound this woman, a daughter of Abraham, for eighteen years — shouldn’t she be untied from this bondage[fn] on the Sabbath day? ”
“If not, while the other is still far off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.
“For they can no longer die, because they are like angels and are children of God, since they are children of the resurrection.
“Every day while I was with you in the temple, you never laid a hand on me. But this is your hour — and the dominion of darkness.”
Finding that he was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem during those days.
That very day Herod and Pilate became friends.[fn] Previously, they had been enemies.
“He is not here, but he has risen! Remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee,
He told them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you — that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”
No one has ever seen God. The one and only Son, who is himself God and is at the Father’s side[fn] — he has revealed him.
“How do you know me? ” Nathanael asked.
“Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you,” Jesus answered.
“How can anyone be born when he is old? ” Nicodemus asked him. “Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born? ”
“No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven — the Son of Man.[fn]
The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is from the earth is earthly and speaks in earthly terms.[fn] The one who comes from heaven is above all.
But the man who was healed did not know who it was, because Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.[fn]
“not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God. He has seen the Father.
He was referring to Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son,[fn] one of the Twelve, because he was going to betray him.
Nicodemus — the one who came to him previously and who was one of them — said to them,
“The one who is from God listens to God’s words. This is why you don’t listen, because you are not from God.”
He answered, “Whether or not he’s a sinner, I don’t know. One thing I do know: I was blind, and now I can see! ”
Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things and asked him, “We aren’t blind too, are we? ”
“The hired hand, since he is not the shepherd and doesn’t own the sheep, leaves them[fn] and runs away when he sees a wolf coming. The wolf then snatches and scatters them.
“We aren’t stoning you for a good work,” the Jews answered, “but for blasphemy, because you — being a man — make yourself God.”
The Jews who were with her in the house consoling her saw that Mary got up quickly and went out. They followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to cry there.
One of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all!
He did not say this on his own, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation,
Meanwhile, the crowd, which had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify.[fn]
One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden? ”
“You are a king then? ” Pilate asked.
“You say that I’m a king,” Jesus replied. “I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
