and Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary,
who gave birth to Jesus who is called the Messiah.
So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations; and from David until the exile to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the exile to Babylon until the Messiah, fourteen generations.
The birth of Jesus Christ came about this way: After his mother Mary had been engaged[fn] to Joseph, it was discovered before they came together that she was pregnant from the Holy Spirit.
So he assembled all the chief priests and scribes of the people and asked them where the Messiah would be born.
Now when John heard in prison what the Christ was doing, he sent a message through his disciples
“You are not to be called instructors either, because you have one Instructor, the Messiah.
“For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and they will deceive many.
“If anyone tells you then, ‘See, here is the Messiah! ’ or, ‘Over here! ’ do not believe it.
But Jesus kept silent. The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”
So when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Who is it you want me to release for you — Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ? ”
Pilate asked them, “What should I do then with Jesus, who is called Christ? ”
They all answered, “Crucify him! ”
“But you,” he asked them, “who do you say that I am? ”
Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah.”
“And whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in my name, because you belong to Christ — truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.
While Jesus was teaching in the temple, he asked, “How can the scribes say that the Messiah is the son of David?
“Then if anyone tells you, ‘See, here is the Messiah! See, there! ’ do not believe it.
But he kept silent and did not answer. Again the high priest questioned him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One? ”
“Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe.” Even those who were crucified with him taunted him.
It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he saw the Lord’s Messiah.
Now the people were waiting expectantly, and all of them were questioning in their hearts whether John might be the Messiah.
Also, demons were coming out of many, shouting and saying, “You are the Son of God! ” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.
“But you,” he asked them, “who do you say that I am? ”
Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”
They said, “If you are the Messiah, tell us.”
But he said to them, “If I do tell you, you will not believe.
They began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation, opposing payment of taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king.”
The people stood watching, and even the leaders were scoffing: “He saved others; let him save himself if this is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One! ”
Then one of the criminals hanging there began to yell insults at[fn] him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us! ”
“Wasn’t it necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and enter into his glory? ”
He also said to them, “This is what is written:[fn] The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead the third day,
So they asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you aren’t the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet? ”
He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah”[fn] (which is translated “the Christ”),
“You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah, but I’ve been sent ahead of him.’
The woman said to him, “I know that the Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
“Yet, look, he’s speaking publicly and they’re saying nothing to him. Can it be true that the authorities know he is the Messiah?
“But we know where this man is from. When the Messiah comes, nobody will know where he is from.”
However, many from the crowd believed in him and said, “When the Messiah comes, he won’t perform more signs than this man has done, will he? ”
Others said, “This is the Messiah.” But some said, “Surely the Messiah doesn’t come from Galilee, does he?
“Doesn’t the Scripture say that the Messiah comes from David’s offspring[fn] and from the town of Bethlehem, where David lived? ”
His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews, since the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed him as the Messiah, he would be banned from the synagogue.
