Jesus stopped, called them, and said, “What do you want me to do for you? ”

“Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to him, “tonight, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.”

Then he started to curse and to swear with an oath, “I don’t know the man! ” Immediately a rooster crowed,

When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling for Elijah.”

His mother and his brothers came, and standing outside, they sent word to him and called him.

Sitting down, he called the Twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last and servant of all.”

Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”

So they called the blind man and said to him, “Have courage! Get up; he’s calling for you.”

“Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to him, “today, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”

But he denied it: “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about.” Then he went out to the entryway,[fn] and a rooster crowed.[fn]

Immediately a rooster crowed a second time, and Peter remembered when Jesus had spoken the word to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.

When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “See, he’s calling for Elijah.”

“Still other seed fell on good ground; when it grew up, it produced fruit: a hundred times what was sown.” As he said this, he called out, “Let anyone who has ears to hear listen.”

So he[fn] took her by the hand and called out, “Child, get up! ”

He also said to the one who had invited him, “When you give a lunch or a dinner, don’t invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors, because they might invite you back, and you would be repaid.

“So he called the manager in and asked, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you can no longer be my manager.’

“‘Father Abraham! ’ he called out, ‘Have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this flame! ’

“At his return, having received the authority to be king, he summoned those servants he had given the money to, so that he could find out how much they had made in business.

“I tell you, Peter,” he said, “the rooster will not crow today until[fn] you deny three times that you know me.”

But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about! ” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.

And Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit.” Saying this, he breathed his last.

“How do you know me? ” Nathanael asked.

“Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you,” Jesus answered.

When the headwaiter tasted the water (after it had become wine), he did not know where it came from ​— ​though the servants who had drawn the water knew. He called the groom

“Go call your husband,” he told her, “and come back here.”

The Jews did not believe this about him ​— ​that he was blind and received sight ​— ​until they summoned the parents of the one who had received his sight.

So a second time they summoned the man who had been blind and told him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.”

Having said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.”

Meanwhile, the crowd, which had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify.[fn]

“You call me Teacher and Lord ​— ​and you are speaking rightly, since that is what I am.

Jesus replied, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly I tell you, a rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times.

Peter denied it again. Immediately a rooster crowed.

Then Pilate went back into the headquarters, summoned Jesus, and said to him, “Are you the king of the Jews? ”

He gave her his hand and helped her stand up. He called the saints and widows and presented her alive.

When the angel who spoke to him had gone, he called two of his household servants and a devout soldier, who was one of those who attended him.

They called out, asking if Simon, who was also named Peter, was lodging there.

But Paul called out in a loud voice, “Don’t harm yourself, because we’re all here! ”

Yet another angel, who had authority over fire, came from the altar, and he called with a loud voice to the one who had the sharp sickle, “Use your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of grapes from the vineyard of the earth, because its grapes have ripened.”
