“Reach a settlement quickly with your adversary while you’re on the way with him to the court, or your adversary will hand you over to the judge, and the judge to[fn] the officer, and you will be thrown into prison.

For Herod had arrested John, chained[fn] him, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,

So he sent orders and had John beheaded in the prison.

Jesus came toward them walking on the sea very early in the morning.[fn]

“But he wasn’t willing. Instead, he went and threw him into prison until he could pay what was owed.

“As you are going with your adversary to the ruler, make an effort to settle with him on the way. Then he won’t drag you before the judge, the judge hand you over to the bailiff, and the bailiff throw you into prison.

“But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you. They will hand you over to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name.

“Lord,” he told him, “I’m ready to go with you both to prison and to death.”

(He had been thrown into prison for a rebellion that had taken place in the city, and for murder.)

and released the one they were asking for, who had been thrown into prison for rebellion and murder. But he handed Jesus over to their will.

since John had not yet been thrown into prison.

But an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail during the night, brought them out, and said,

But when the servants[fn] got there, they did not find them in the jail; so they returned and reported,

But Paul said to them, “They beat us in public without a trial, although we are Roman citizens, and threw us in jail. And now are they going to send us away secretly? Certainly not! On the contrary, let them come themselves and escort us out.”

After leaving the jail, they came to Lydia’s house, where they saw and encouraged the brothers and sisters, and departed.

“I persecuted this Way to the death, arresting and putting both men and women in jail,

“I actually did this in Jerusalem, and I locked up many of the saints in prison, since I had received authority for that from the chief priests. When they were put to death, I was in agreement against them.

by beatings, by imprisonments, by riots, by labors, by sleepless nights, by times of hunger,

Are they servants of Christ? I’m talking like a madman ​— ​I’m a better one: with far more labors, many more imprisonments, far worse beatings, many times near death.

Others experienced mockings and scourgings, as well as bonds and imprisonment.

in which[fn] he also went and made proclamation to the spirits in prison

“Don’t be afraid of what you are about to suffer. Look, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison to test you, and you will experience affliction for ten days. Be faithful to the point of death, and I will give you the crown[fn] of life.

He called out in a mighty voice:

It has fallen,[fn]

Babylon the Great has fallen!

She has become a home for demons,

a haunt for every unclean spirit,

a haunt for every unclean bird,

and a haunt[fn] for every unclean and despicable beast.[fn]

When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison
