When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

“And don’t presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones.

“For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter[fn] or one stroke of a letter will pass away from the law until all things are accomplished.

“For I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.

“But I tell you, everyone who is angry with his brother or sister[fn] will be subject to judgment. Whoever insults[fn] his brother or sister will be subject to the court.[fn] Whoever says, ‘You fool! ’ will be subject to hellfire.[fn]

“But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

“But I tell you, everyone who divorces his wife, except in a case of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

“But I tell you, don’t take an oath at all: either by heaven, because it is God’s throne;

“But I tell you, don’t resist[fn] an evildoer. On the contrary, if anyone slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.

“But I tell you, love your enemies[fn] and pray for those who[fn] persecute you,

“So whenever you give to the poor, don’t sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be applauded by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.

“Whenever you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.

“For if you forgive others their offenses, your heavenly Father will forgive you as well.

“Whenever you fast, don’t be gloomy like the hypocrites. For they disfigure their faces so that their fasting is obvious to people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.

“Don’t store up for yourselves treasures[fn] on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.

“Therefore I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing?

“Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these.

“But seek first the kingdom of God[fn] and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.

“For you will be judged by the same standard with which you judge others, and you will be measured by the same measure you use.

“Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and the door[fn] will be opened to you.

“Therefore, whatever you want others to do for you, do also the same for them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

Hearing this, Jesus was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with so great a faith.

Then he touched their eyes, saying, “Let it be done for you according to your faith.”

“Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.

“But when they hand you over, don’t worry about how or what you are to speak. For you will be given what to say at that hour,

“When they persecute you in one town, flee to another. For truly I tell you, you will not have gone through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

“What I tell you in the dark, speak in the light. What you hear in a whisper,[fn] proclaim on the housetops.

“And whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple,[fn] truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.”

“What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

“Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one greater than John the Baptist has appeared,[fn] but the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

“We played the flute for you,

but you didn’t dance;

we sang a lament,

but you didn’t mourn![fn]

“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented in sackcloth and ashes long ago.

“But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”

“I tell you that something greater than the temple is here.

“Therefore, I tell you, people will be forgiven every sin and blasphemy, but the blasphemy against[fn] the Spirit will not be forgiven.[fn]

“I tell you that on the day of judgment people will have to account for every careless[fn] word they speak.[fn]

He answered, “Because the secrets of the kingdom of heaven have been given for you to know, but it has not been given to them.

“For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see the things you see but didn’t see them, to hear the things you hear but didn’t hear them.

“Why is it you don’t understand that when I told you, ‘Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees,’ it wasn’t about bread? ”

“Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

“But I tell you: Elijah has already come, and they didn’t recognize him. On the contrary, they did whatever they pleased to him. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.”

“Because of your little faith,” he[fn] told them. “For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of[fn] a mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”[fn]

“Truly I tell you,” he said, “unless you turn and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

“See to it that you don’t despise one of these little ones, because I tell you that in heaven their angels continually view the face of my Father in heaven.[fn]

“What do you think? If someone has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, won’t he leave the ninety-nine on the hillside and go and search for the stray?
