“I baptize you with[fn] water for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to remove[fn] his sandals. He himself will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

When Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water. The heavens suddenly opened for him,[fn] and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on him.

“Go! ” he told them. So when they had come out, they entered the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and perished in the water.

“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter answered him, “command me to come to you on the water.”

“Lord,” he said, “have mercy on my son, because he has seizures[fn] and suffers terribly. He often falls into the fire and often into the water.

Jesus answered, “Truly I tell you, unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water there. People were coming and being baptized,

A woman of Samaria came to draw water.

“Give me a drink,” Jesus said to her,

They deliberately overlook this: By the word of God the heavens came into being long ago and the earth was brought about from water and through water.

Jesus Christ ​— ​he is the one who came by water and blood, not by water only, but by water and by blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.
