“How can I know this? ” Zechariah asked the angel. “For I am an old man, and my wife is well along in years.”
All who heard about him took it to heart, saying, “What then will this child become? ” For, indeed, the Lord’s hand was with him.
When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”
“Why were you searching for me? ” he asked them. “Didn’t you know that it was necessary for me to be in my Father’s house? ”[fn]
He then said to the crowds who came out to be baptized by him, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they asked him, “Teacher, what should we do? ”
Some soldiers also questioned him, “What should we do? ”
He said to them, “Don’t take money from anyone by force or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.”
“Leave us alone! What do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God! ”
Amazement came over them all, and they were saying to one another, “What is this message? For he commands the unclean spirits with authority and power, and they come out! ”
Then the scribes and the Pharisees began to think to themselves, “Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone? ”
But perceiving their thoughts, Jesus replied to them, “Why are you thinking this in your hearts?[fn]
But the Pharisees and their scribes were complaining to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners? ”
Then they said to him, “John’s disciples fast often and say prayers, and those of the Pharisees do the same, but yours eat and drink.”
But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath? ”
Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you: Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it? ”
They, however, were filled with rage and started discussing with one another what they might do to Jesus.
“Why do you look at the splinter in your brother’s eye, but don’t notice the beam of wood in your own eye?
“I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them:
After John’s messengers left, he began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?
“What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothes? See, those who are splendidly dressed and live in luxury are in royal palaces.
“What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
“To what then should I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like?
When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “This man, if he were a prophet, would know who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him — she’s a sinner! ”
“Since they could not pay it back, he graciously forgave them both. So, which of them will love him more? ”
Those who were at the table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this man who even forgives sins? ”
He said to them, “Where is your faith? ”
They were fearful and amazed, asking one another, “Who then is this? He commands even the winds and the waves, and they obey him! ”
When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before him, and said in a loud voice, “What do you have to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torment me! ”
“What is your name? ” Jesus asked him.
“Legion,” he said, because many demons had entered him.
“I beheaded John,” Herod said, “but who is this I hear such things about? ” And he wanted to see him.
While he was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am? ”
“But you,” he asked them, “who do you say that I am? ”
Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”
“For what does it benefit someone if he gains the whole world, and yet loses or forfeits himself?
Then an expert in the law stood up to test him, saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? ”
“Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers? ”
He also said to them, “Suppose one of you[fn] has a friend and goes to him at midnight and says to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,
“What father among you, if his son[fn] asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead of a fish?
“And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons drive them out? For this reason they will be your judges.
“But I will show you the one to fear: Fear him who has authority to throw people into hell after death. Yes, I say to you, this is the one to fear!
“Whenever they bring you before synagogues and rulers and authorities, don’t worry about how you should defend yourselves or what you should say.
