When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty?[fn] It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.
“For if you love those who love you, what reward will you have? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same?
“But when you give to the poor, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
“Therefore I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing?
“And why do you worry about clothes? Observe how the wildflowers of the field grow: They don’t labor or spin thread.
“So don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat? ’ or ‘What will we drink? ’ or ‘What will we wear? ’
“Why do you look at the splinter in your brother’s eye but don’t notice the beam of wood in your own eye?
He said to them, “Why are you afraid, you of little faith? ” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
Suddenly they shouted, “What do you have to do with us,[fn] Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time? ”
When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners? ”
“Go and learn what this means: I desire mercy and not sacrifice. For I didn’t come to call the righteous, but sinners.”[fn]
Then John’s disciples came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast? ”
“When you enter any town or village, find out who is worthy, and stay there until you leave.
“But when they hand you over, don’t worry about how or what you are to speak. For you will be given what to say at that hour,
As these men were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?
“What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothes? See, those who wear soft clothes are in royal palaces.
“What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
“To what should I compare this generation? It’s like children sitting in the marketplaces who call out to other children:
He said to them, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and those who were with him were hungry:
“If you had known what this means, I desire mercy and not sacrifice, you would not have condemned the innocent.
He replied to them, “Who among you, if he had a sheep that fell into a pit on the Sabbath, wouldn’t take hold of it and lift it out?
“And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons drive them out? For this reason they will be your judges.
He replied to the one who was speaking to him, “Who is my mother and who are my brothers? ”
Then the disciples came up and asked him, “Why are you speaking to them in parables? ”
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand, caught hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt? ”
“Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat.”[fn]
Jesus called his disciples and said, “I have compassion on the crowd, because they’ve already stayed with me three days and have nothing to eat. I don’t want to send them away hungry, otherwise they might collapse on the way.”
Aware of this, Jesus said, “You of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves that you do not have bread?
“For what will it benefit someone if he gains the whole world yet loses his life? Or what will anyone give in exchange for his life?
So the disciples asked him, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first? ”
Then the disciples approached Jesus privately and said, “Why couldn’t we drive it out? ”
At that time[fn] the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “So who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven? ”
“What do you think? If someone has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, won’t he leave the ninety-nine on the hillside and go and search for the stray?
“Why then,” they asked him, “did Moses command us to give divorce papers and to send her away? ”
Just then someone came up and asked him, “Teacher, what good must I do to have eternal life? ”
When the disciples heard this, they were utterly astonished and asked, “Then who can be saved? ”
Then Peter responded to him, “See, we have left everything and followed you. So what will there be for us? ”
