When the LORD saw that human wickedness was widespread on the earth and that every inclination of the human mind was nothing but evil all the time,
“I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust of the earth, then your offspring could be counted.
One of the survivors came and told Abram the Hebrew, who lived near the oaks belonging to Mamre the Amorite, the brother of Eshcol and the brother of Aner. They were bound by a treaty with Abram.
Then he said, “Let my lord not be angry, and I will speak further. Suppose thirty are found there? ”
He answered, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”
Then he said, “Let my lord not be angry, and I will speak one more time. Suppose ten are found there? ”
He answered, “I will not destroy it on account of ten.”
Then Abimelech called Abraham in and said to him, “What have you done to us? How did I sin against you that you have brought such enormous guilt on me and on my kingdom? You have done things to me that should never be done.”
Then Abimelech said, “What have you done to us? One of the people could easily have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us.”
But Jacob said, “No, please! If I have found favor with you, take this gift from me. For indeed, I have seen your face, and it is like seeing God’s face, since you have accepted me.
Now one day he went into the house to do his work, and none of the household servants were there.[fn]
“If an alien resides among you and wants to observe the LORD’s Passover, every male in his household must be circumcised, and then he may participate;[fn] he will become like a native of the land. But no uncircumcised person may eat it.
But they didn’t listen to Moses; some people left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and stank. Therefore Moses was angry with them.
Yet on the seventh day some of the people went out to gather, but they did not find any.
“Put boundaries for the people all around the mountain and say: Be careful that you don’t go up on the mountain or touch its base. Anyone who touches the mountain must be put to death.
“When a man sells his daughter as a concubine,[fn] she is not to leave as the male slaves do.
“If a person schemes and willfully[fn] acts against his neighbor to murder him, you must take him from my altar to be put to death.
“Whoever kidnaps a person must be put to death, whether he sells him or the person is found in his possession.
“When men quarrel and one strikes the other with a stone or his fist, and the injured man does not die but is confined to bed,
“When a man strikes the eye of his male or female slave and destroys it, he must let the slave go free in compensation for his eye.
“When a man uncovers a pit or digs a pit, and does not cover it, and an ox or a donkey falls into it,
“When a man’s ox injures his neighbor’s ox and it dies, they must sell the live ox and divide its proceeds; they must also divide the dead animal.
“When a man steals an ox or a sheep and butchers it or sells it, he must repay five cattle for the ox or four sheep for the sheep.
“When a man lets a field or vineyard be grazed in, and then allows his animals to go and graze in someone else’s field, he must repay[fn] with the best of his own field or vineyard.
“When a man gives his neighbor valuables[fn] or goods to keep, but they are stolen from that person’s house, the thief, if caught, must repay double.
“When a man gives his neighbor a donkey, an ox, a sheep, or any other animal to care for, but it dies, is injured, or is stolen, while no one is watching,
“When a man borrows an animal from his neighbor, and it is injured or dies while its owner is not there with it, the man must make full restitution.
“If a man seduces a virgin who is not engaged, and he sleeps with her, he must certainly pay the bridal price for her to be his wife.
He told the elders, “Wait here for us until we return to you. Aaron and Hur are here with you. Whoever has a dispute should go to them.”
“So I said to them, ‘Whoever has gold, take it off,’ and they gave it to me. When I threw it into the fire, out came this calf! ”
The LORD replied to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against me I will erase from my book.
The LORD would speak with Moses face to face, just as a man speaks with his friend, then Moses would return to the camp. His assistant, the young man Joshua son of Nun, would not leave the inside of the tent.
“Tell the Israelites: When someone sins unintentionally against any of the LORD’s commands and does anything prohibited by them —
“Or if someone swears rashly to do what is good or evil — concerning anything a person may speak rashly in an oath — without being aware of it, but later recognizes it, he incurs guilt in such an instance.
“When someone sins and offends the LORD by deceiving his neighbor in regard to a deposit, a security,[fn] or a robbery; or defrauds his neighbor;
“If a man sleeps with her, and blood from her menstruation gets on him, he will be unclean for seven days, and every bed he lies on will become unclean.
“This is the law for someone with a discharge: a man who has an emission of semen, becoming unclean by it;
“If a man has sexual intercourse with a woman who is a slave designated for another man, but she has not been redeemed or given her freedom, there must be punishment.[fn] They are not to be put to death, because she had not been freed.
“Say to the Israelites: Any Israelite or alien residing in Israel who gives any of his children to Molech must be put to death; the people of the country are to stone him.
