but Eleazar stood his ground and attacked the Philistines until his hand was tired and stuck to his sword. The LORD brought about a great victory that day. Then the troops came back to him, but only to plunder the dead.

but Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field, defended it, and struck down the Philistines. So the LORD brought about a great victory.

Naaman, commander of the army for the king of Aram, was a man important to his master and highly regarded because through him, the LORD had given victory to Aram. The man was a valiant warrior, but he had a skin disease.

Therefore, the LORD gave Israel a deliverer, and they escaped from the power of the Arameans. Then the people of Israel returned to their former way of life,[fn]

Let the whole earth sing to the LORD.

Proclaim his salvation from day to day.

Arise, LORD God, come to your resting place,

But now, for a brief moment, grace has come from the LORD our God to preserve a remnant for us and give us a stake in his holy place. Even in our slavery, God has given us a little relief and light to our eyes.

After all that has happened to us because of our evil deeds and terrible guilt ​— ​though you, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserve and have allowed us to survive[fn] ​— ​

“All the royal officials and the people of the royal provinces know that one law applies to every man or woman who approaches the king in the inner courtyard and who has not been summoned ​— ​the death penalty ​— ​ unless the king extends the gold scepter, allowing that person to live. I have not been summoned to appear before the king for the last[fn] thirty days.”

His wife said to him, “Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die! ”

His children are far from safety.

They are crushed at the city gate,

with no one to rescue them.

But the sight of the wicked will fail.

Their way of escape will be cut off,

and their only hope is their last breath.

Yes, this will result in my deliverance,

for no godless person can appear before him.

Because his appetite is never satisfied,[fn]

he does not let anything he desires escape.

Terrors are turned loose against me;

they chase my dignity away like the wind,

and my prosperity has passed by like a cloud.

You lift me up on the wind and make me ride it;

you scatter me in the storm.

Salvation belongs to the LORD;

“Because of the devastation of the needy

and the groaning of the poor,

I will now rise up,” says the LORD.

“I will provide safety for the one who longs for it.”

The LORD is my rock,

my fortress, and my deliverer,

my God, my rock where I seek refuge,

my shield and the horn of my salvation,

my stronghold.

You have given me the shield of your salvation;

your right hand upholds me,

and your humility exalts me.

The LORD lives ​— ​blessed be my rock!

The God of my salvation is exalted.
