(Diodorus, Strabo, Plutarch, others; for נֵס, a standard, Isaiah 5:26; Isaiah 49:22; Isaiah 62:10.) The word is condemned by Phrynichus, edition Lob., p. 418, who remarks that Menander was the first to use it; cf. Sturz, De dial. Maced. et Alex., p. 196.
