“Whenever you fast, don’t be gloomy like the hypocrites. For they disfigure their faces so that their fasting is obvious to people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.
“This is the one about whom it is written:
See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you;
he will prepare your way before you.
He was transfigured in front of them, and his face shone like the sun; his clothes became as white as the light.
“See to it that you don’t despise one of these little ones, because I tell you that in heaven their angels continually view the face of my Father in heaven.[fn]
So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are truthful and teach truthfully the way of God. You don’t care what anyone thinks nor do you show partiality.[fn]
Going a little farther,[fn] he fell facedown and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
When they came, they said to him, “Teacher, we know you are truthful and don’t care what anyone thinks, nor do you show partiality but teach the way of God truthfully. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay or shouldn’t we? ”
Then some began to spit on him, to blindfold him, and to beat him, saying, “Prophesy! ” The temple servants also took him and slapped him.
While he was in one of the towns, a man was there who had leprosy[fn] all over him. He saw Jesus, fell facedown, and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
“This is the one about whom it is written:
See, I am sending my messenger
ahead of you;
he will prepare your way before you.
As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white.
When the days were coming to a close for him to be taken up, he determined[fn] to journey to Jerusalem.
He sent messengers ahead of himself, and on the way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make preparations for him.
After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two[fn] others, and he sent them ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself was about to go.
“Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why don’t you know how to interpret this present time?
They questioned him, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach correctly, and you don’t show partiality[fn] but teach truthfully the way of God.
So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground.
“Why are you looking for the living among the dead? ” asked the men.
“You have revealed the paths of life to me;
you will fill me with gladness
in your presence.
“The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our ancestors, has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and denied before Pilate, though he had decided to release him.
Then they went out from the presence of the Sanhedrin, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to be treated shamefully on behalf of the Name.[fn]
And all who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at him and saw that his face was like the face of an angel.
“Our ancestors in turn received it and with Joshua brought it in when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before them, until the days of David.
“Before his coming to public attention, John had previously proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.
“From one man[fn] he has made every nationality to live over the whole earth and has determined their appointed times and the boundaries of where they live.
“And now I know that none of you, among whom I went about preaching the kingdom, will ever see me again.
grieving most of all over his statement that they would never see his face again. And they accompanied him to the ship.
“I answered them that it is not the Roman custom to give someone up[fn] before the accused faces the accusers and has an opportunity for a defense against the charges.
For now we see only a reflection[fn] as in a mirror, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, as I am fully known.
The secrets of his heart will be revealed, and as a result he will fall facedown and worship God, proclaiming, “God is really among you.”
while you join in helping us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our[fn] behalf for the gift that came to us through the prayers of many.
Anyone you forgive, I do too. For what I have forgiven — if I have forgiven anything — it is for your benefit in the presence of Christ,
Now if the ministry that brought death, chiseled in letters on stones, came with glory, so that the Israelites were not able to gaze steadily at Moses’s face because of its glory, which was set aside,
We are not like Moses, who used to put a veil over his face to prevent the Israelites from gazing steadily until the end[fn] of the glory of what was being set aside,
For God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of God’s glory in the face of Jesus Christ.
We are not commending ourselves to you again, but giving you an opportunity to be proud of us, so that you may have a reply for those who take pride in outward appearance rather than in the heart.
Therefore, show them proof before the churches of your love and of our boasting about you.
Now I, Paul, myself, appeal to you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ — I who am humble among you in person but bold toward you when absent.
Look at what is obvious.[fn] If anyone is confident that he belongs to Christ, let him remind himself of this: Just as he belongs to Christ, so do we.
