Then he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. They were completely astounded,
“He will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.
After John’s messengers left, he began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?
and as they were sailing he fell asleep. Then a fierce windstorm came down on the lake; they were being swamped and were in danger.
They came and woke him up, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to die! ”
Then he got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waves. So they ceased, and there was a calm.
He said to them, “Where is your faith? ”
They were fearful and amazed, asking one another, “Who then is this? He commands even the winds and the waves, and they obey him! ”
When we had put out to sea from there, we sailed along the northern coast[fn] of Cyprus because the winds were against us.
Sailing slowly for many days, with difficulty we arrived off Cnidus. Since the wind did not allow us to approach it, we sailed along the south side of Crete off Salmone.
But before long, a fierce wind called the “northeaster” rushed down from the island.
Since the ship was caught and unable to head into the wind, we gave way to it and were driven along.
Then we will no longer be little children, tossed by the waves and blown around by every wind of teaching, by human cunning with cleverness in the techniques of deceit.
And consider ships: Though very large and driven by fierce winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.
These people are dangerous reefs[fn] at your love feasts as they eat with you without reverence. They are shepherds who only look after themselves. They are waterless clouds carried along by winds; trees in late autumn — fruitless, twice dead and uprooted.
