a. properly, of snares in which birds are entangled and caught, Proverbs 6:5; Proverbs 7:23; Psalm 90:3 (Ps. 91:3); Psalm 123:7 (Ps. 124:7); παγίδας ἱσταναι, Aristophanes av. 527; hence, ὡς παγίς, as a snare, i. e. unexpectedly, suddenly, because birds and beasts are caught unawares, Luke 21:35.
