So when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Who is it you want me to release for you — Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ? ”
Pilate asked them, “What should I do then with Jesus, who is called Christ? ”
They all answered, “Crucify him! ”
“So give orders that the tomb be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come, steal him, and tell the people, ‘He has been raised from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.”
“Go, therefore, and make disciples of[fn] all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
They discussed it among themselves: “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him? ’
“What then will the owner[fn] of the vineyard do? He will come and kill the farmers and give the vineyard to others.
“Therefore be alert, since you don’t know when the master of the house is coming — whether in the evening or at midnight or at the crowing of the rooster or early in the morning.
Pilate asked them again, “Then what do you want me to do with the one you call the king of the Jews? ”
So the Lord Jesus, after speaking to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.
He then said to the crowds who came out to be baptized by him, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
“Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance. And don’t start saying to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones.
“The ax is already at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”
“To what then should I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like?
“Since they could not pay it back, he graciously forgave them both. So, which of them will love him more? ”
“Therefore take care how you listen. For whoever has, more will be given to him; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.”
He told them, “The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.
But Martha was distracted by her many tasks, and she came up and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to serve alone? So tell her to give me a hand.”[fn]
“If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him? ”
“If, therefore, your whole body is full of light, with no part of it in darkness, it will be entirely illuminated, as when a lamp shines its light on you.”
“He told the vineyard worker, ‘Listen, for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it even waste the soil? ’
But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, responded by telling the crowd, “There are six days when work should be done; therefore come on those days and be healed and not on the Sabbath day.”
“In the same way, therefore, every one of you who does not renounce[fn] all his possessions cannot be my disciple.
“So if you have not been faithful with worldly wealth, who will trust you with what is genuine?
Therefore he said, “A nobleman traveled to a far country to receive for himself authority to be king[fn] and then to return.
“So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
“What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?
But he looked at them and said, “Then what is the meaning of this Scripture:[fn]
The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone?
“In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For all seven had married her.”
“Teacher,” they asked him, “so when will these things happen? And what will be the sign when these things are about to take place? ”
They all asked, “Are you, then, the Son of God? ”
And he said to them, “You say that I am.”
A third time he said to them, “Why? What has this man done wrong? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore, I will have him whipped and then release him.”
“What then? ” they asked him. “Are you Elijah? ”
“I am not,” he said.
“Are you the Prophet? ”
“No,” he answered.
“Who are you, then? ” they asked. “We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What can you tell us about yourself? ”
So they asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you aren’t the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet? ”
“Come and you’ll see,” he replied. So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon.[fn]
