Blessed are you when people hate you,

when they exclude you, insult you,

and slander your name as evil

because of the Son of Man.

“Woe to you[fn]

when all people speak well of you,

for this is the way their ancestors

used to treat the false prophets.

“And the seed on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy. Having no root, these believe for a while and fall away in a time of testing.

“For whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and that of the Father and the holy angels.

He said to them, “Whenever you pray, say,

your name be honored as holy.

Your kingdom come.[fn]

“When a strong man, fully armed, guards his estate, his possessions are secure.

“When an unclean spirit comes out of a person, it roams through waterless places looking for rest, and not finding rest, it then[fn] says, ‘I’ll go back to my house that I came from.’

“Your eye is the lamp of the body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is also full of light. But when it is bad, your body is also full of darkness.

“If, therefore, your whole body is full of light, with no part of it in darkness, it will be entirely illuminated, as when a lamp shines its light on you.”

“Whenever they bring you before synagogues and rulers and authorities, don’t worry about how you should defend yourselves or what you should say.

“When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, don’t sit in the place of honor, because a more distinguished person than you may have been invited by your host.

“But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when the one who invited you comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ You will then be honored in the presence of all the other guests.

He also said to the one who had invited him, “When you give a lunch or a dinner, don’t invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors, because they might invite you back, and you would be repaid.

“I know what I’ll do so that when I’m removed from management, people will welcome me into their homes.’

“And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of worldly wealth[fn] so that when it fails, they may welcome you into eternal dwellings.

“In the same way, when you have done all that you were commanded, you should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we’ve only done our duty.’ ”

“Teacher,” they asked him, “so when will these things happen? And what will be the sign when these things are about to take place? ”

“When you hear of wars and rebellions,[fn] don’t be alarmed. Indeed, it is necessary that these things take place first, but the end won’t come right away.”

“When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then recognize that its desolation has come near.

“As soon as they put out leaves you can see for yourselves and recognize that summer is already near.

Then he said, “Jesus, remember me[fn] when you come into your kingdom.”
