“So you testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets.

They were all speaking well of him[fn] and were amazed by the gracious words that came from his mouth; yet they said, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son? ”

He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him.[fn]

(John testified concerning him and exclaimed, “This was the one of whom I said, ‘The one coming after me ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’ ”)

And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and he rested on him.

“I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”[fn]

and because he did not need anyone to testify about man; for he himself knew what was in man.

“Truly I tell you, we speak what we know and we testify to what we have seen, but you do not accept our testimony.

So they came to John and told him, “Rabbi, the one you testified about, and who was with you across the Jordan, is baptizing ​— ​and everyone is going to him.”

“You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah, but I’ve been sent ahead of him.’

He testifies to what he has seen and heard, and yet no one accepts his testimony.

Now many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of what the woman said[fn] when she testified, “He told me everything I ever did.”

(Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)

“If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.

“But I have a greater testimony than John’s because of the works that the Father has given me to accomplish. These very works I am doing testify about me that the Father has sent me.

“You pore over the Scriptures because you think you have eternal life in them, and yet they testify about me.

“The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me because I testify about it ​— ​that its works are evil.

So the Pharisees said to him, “You are testifying about yourself. Your testimony is not valid.”

“I am the one who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me.”

“I did tell you and you don’t believe,” Jesus answered them. “The works that I do in my Father’s name testify about me.

Meanwhile, the crowd, which had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify.[fn]

When Jesus had said this, he was troubled in his spirit and testified, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”

“When the Counselor comes, the one I will send to you from the Father ​— ​the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father ​— ​he will testify about me.

“If I have spoken wrongly,” Jesus answered him, “give evidence[fn] about the wrong; but if rightly, why do you hit me? ”

“You are a king then? ” Pilate asked.

“You say that I’m a king,” Jesus replied. “I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”

He who saw this has testified so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows he is telling the truth.

This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.

“Brothers and sisters, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and wisdom, whom we can appoint to this duty.

They said, “Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, who has a good reputation with the whole Jewish nation, was divinely directed by a holy angel to call you to his house and to hear a message from you.”

“All the prophets testify about him that through his name everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins.”

“After removing him, he raised up David as their king and testified about him, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse to be a man after my own heart, who will carry out all my will.’

So they stayed there a long time and spoke boldly for the Lord, who testified to the message of his grace by enabling them to do signs and wonders.

“And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as he also did to us.

The brothers and sisters at Lystra and Iconium spoke highly of him.

I can testify that, according to their ability and even beyond their ability, of their own accord,

Where, then, is your blessing? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me.

For I testify about him that he works hard[fn] for you, for those in Laodicea, and for those in Hierapolis.
