Lamech said to his wives:
Adah and Zillah, hear my voice;
wives of Lamech, pay attention to my words.
For I killed a man for wounding me,
a young man for striking me.
When Laban heard the news about his sister’s son Jacob, he ran to meet him, hugged him, and kissed him. Then he took him to his house, and Jacob told him all that had happened.
Moses told Aaron everything the LORD had sent him to say, and about all the signs he had commanded him to do.
“Impose heavier work on the men. Then they will be occupied with it and not pay attention to deceptive words.”
“Now listen to me; I will give you some advice, and God be with you. You be the one to represent the people before God and bring their cases to him.
After Moses came back, he summoned the elders of the people and set before them all these words that the LORD had commanded him.
Then all the people responded together, “We will do all that the LORD has spoken.” So Moses brought the people’s words back to the LORD.
Moses came and told the people all the commands of the LORD and all the ordinances. Then all the people responded with a single voice, “We will do everything that the LORD has commanded.”
Moses took the blood, splattered it on the people, and said, “This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you concerning all these words.”
The LORD answered Moses, “I will do this very thing you have asked, for you have found favor with me, and I know you by name.”
The LORD also said to Moses, “Write down these words, for I have made a covenant with you and with Israel based on these words.”
Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did not eat food or drink water. He wrote the Ten Commandments, the words of the covenant, on the tablets.
Moses assembled the entire Israelite community and said to them, “These are the things that the LORD has commanded you to do:
The LORD answered Moses, “Is the LORD’s arm weak?[fn] Now you will see whether or not what I have promised will happen to you.”
he said:
“Listen to what I say:
If there is a prophet among you from the LORD,
I make myself known to him in a vision;
I speak with him in a dream.
These are the words Moses spoke to all Israel across the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah opposite Suph,[fn] between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Di-zahab.
“So I sent messengers with an offer of peace to King Sihon of Heshbon from the Wilderness of Kedemoth, saying,
“But the LORD was angry with me because of you[fn] and would not listen to me. The LORD said to me, ‘That’s enough! Do not speak to me again about this matter.
“Only be on your guard and diligently watch yourselves, so that you don’t forget the things your eyes have seen and so that they don’t slip from your mind[fn] as long as you live. Teach them to your children and your grandchildren.
“When you are in distress and all these things have happened to you, in the future you will return to the LORD your God and obey him.
“The LORD heard your[fn] words when you spoke to me. He said to me, ‘I have heard the words that these people have spoken to you. Everything they have said is right.
“On the day of the assembly the LORD gave me the two stone tablets, inscribed by God’s finger. The exact words were on them, which the LORD spoke to you from the fire on the mountain.
“Then on the day of the assembly, the LORD wrote on the tablets what had been written previously, the Ten Commandments that he had spoken to you on the mountain from the fire. The LORD gave them to me,
“Be careful to obey all these things I command you, so that you and your children after you may prosper forever, because you will be doing what is good and right in the sight of the LORD your God.
“do not listen to that prophet’s words or to that dreamer. For the LORD your God is testing you to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and all your soul.
“you are to inquire, investigate, and interrogate thoroughly. If the report turns out to be true that this detestable act has been done among you,
“Do not deny justice or show partiality to anyone. Do not accept a bribe, for it blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous.
“and accuses her of shameful conduct, and gives her a bad name, saying, ‘I married this woman and was intimate with her, but I didn’t find any evidence of her virginity,’
“He has accused her of shameful conduct, saying, “I didn’t find any evidence of your daughter’s virginity,” but here is the evidence of my daughter’s virginity.’ They will spread out the cloth before the city elders.
But if this accusation is true and no evidence of the young woman’s virginity is found,
“Write all the words of this law on the stones after you cross to enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, has promised you.
“‘Anyone who does not put the words of this law into practice is cursed.’
And all the people will say, ‘Amen! ’
“Do not turn aside to the right or the left from all the things I am commanding you today, and do not follow other gods to worship them.
These are the words of the covenant that the LORD commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb.
“Therefore, observe the words of this covenant and follow them, so that you will succeed in everything you do.
“Gather the people — men, women, dependents, and the resident aliens within your city gates — so that they may listen and learn to fear the LORD your God and be careful to follow all the words of this law.
“Assemble all your tribal elders and officers before me so that I may speak these words directly to them and call heaven and earth as witnesses against them.
Moses came with Joshua[fn] son of Nun and recited all the words of this song in the presence of the people.
he said to them, “Take to heart all these words I am giving as a warning to you today, so that you may command your children to follow all the words of this law carefully.
