The LORD gave them rest on every side according to all he had sworn to their ancestors. None of their enemies were able to stand against them, for the LORD handed over all their enemies to them.
A long time after the LORD had given Israel rest from all the enemies around them, Joshua was old, advanced in age.
The LORD’s anger burned against Israel, and he handed them over to marauders who raided them. He sold them to the enemies around them, and they could no longer resist their enemies.
The Israelites did not remember the LORD their God who had rescued them from the hand of the enemies around them.
Samuel took the flask of oil, poured it out on Saul’s head, kissed him, and said, “Hasn’t the LORD anointed you ruler over his inheritance?[fn]
“So the LORD sent Jerubbaal, Barak,[fn] Jephthah, and Samuel. He rescued you from the power of the enemies around you, and you lived securely.
for he had dominion over everything west of the Euphrates from Tiphsah to Gaza and over all the kings west of the Euphrates. He had peace on all his surrounding borders.
“The LORD my God has now given me rest on every side; there is no enemy or misfortune.

All Judah rejoiced over the oath, for they had sworn it wholeheartedly. They had sought him with all sincerity, and he was found by them. So the LORD gave them rest on every side.
So the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the power of King Sennacherib of Assyria and from the power of all others. He gave them rest[fn] on every side.
After this, he built the outer wall of the city of David from west of Gihon in the valley to the entrance of the Fish Gate; he brought it around Ophel, and he heightened it considerably. He also placed military commanders in all the fortified cities of Judah.
All their neighbors supported them[fn] with silver articles, gold, goods, livestock, and valuables, in addition to all that was given as a freewill offering.
The singers gathered from the region around Jerusalem, from the settlements of the Netophathites,
I have heard the gossip of many;
terror is on every side.
When they conspired against me,
they plotted to take my life.
And every stroke of the appointed[fn] staff
that the LORD brings down on him
will be to the sound of tambourines and lyres;
he will fight against him with brandished weapons.
Don’t go out to the fields;
don’t walk on the road.
For the enemy has a sword;
terror is on every side.
“Then people will come from the cities of Judah and from the area around Jerusalem, from the land of Benjamin and from the Judean foothills, from the hill country and from the Negev bringing burnt offerings and sacrifices, grain offerings and frankincense, and thanksgiving sacrifices to the house of the LORD.
For I have heard the gossip of many people,
“Terror is on every side!
Report him; let’s report him! ”
Everyone I trusted[fn] watches for my fall.
“Perhaps he will be deceived
so that we might prevail against him
and take our vengeance on him.”
Why have I seen this?
They are terrified,
they are retreating,
their warriors are crushed,
they flee headlong,
they never look back,
terror is on every side!
This is the LORD’s declaration.
Mourn for him, all you surrounding nations,
everyone who knows his name.
Say, “How the mighty scepter is shattered,
the glorious staff! ”
They will take their tents and their flocks
along with their tent curtains and all their equipment.
They will take their camels for themselves.
They will call out to them,
“Terror is on every side! ”
Summon the archers to Babylon,
all who string the bow;
camp all around her; let none escape.
Repay her according to her deeds;
just as she has done, do the same to her,
for she has acted arrogantly against the LORD,
against the Holy One of Israel.
I will send strangers to Babylon
who will scatter her and strip her land bare,
for they will come against her
from every side in the day of disaster.
The appearance of the brilliant light all around was like that of a rainbow in a cloud on a rainy day. This was the appearance of the likeness of the LORD’s glory. When I saw it, I fell facedown and heard a voice speaking.
“I will send famine and dangerous animals against you. They will leave you childless. Plague and bloodshed will sweep through you, and I will bring a sword against you. I, the LORD, have spoken.”
Their entire bodies, including their backs, hands, wings, and the wheels that the four of them had, were full of eyes all around.
“Men give gifts to all prostitutes, but you gave gifts to all your lovers. You bribed them to come to you from all around for your sexual favors.
“I am therefore going to gather all the lovers you pleased — all those you loved as well as all those you hated. I will gather them against you from all around and expose your nakedness to them so they see you completely naked.
“Then the nations from the surrounding provinces
set out against him.
They spread their net over him;
he was caught in their pit.
“Therefore, Oholibah, this is what the Lord GOD says: I am going to incite your lovers against you, those you turned away from in disgust. I will bring them against you from every side:
He led me all around them. There were a great many of them on the surface of the valley, and they were very dry.
The recesses and their jambs had beveled windows all around the inside of the gate. The porticoes also had windows all around on the inside. Each jamb was decorated with palm trees.
Both the gate and its portico had windows all around, like the other windows. It was 87 1/2 feet long and 43 3/4 feet wide.
Then he measured the wall of the temple; it was 10 1/2 feet thick. The width of the side rooms all around the temple was 7 feet.[fn]
The side rooms opened into the free space, one entrance toward the north and another to the south. The area of free space was 8 3/4 feet wide all around.
