Saul and Jonathan,

loved and delightful,

During the long war between the house of Saul and the house of David, David was growing stronger and the house of Saul was becoming weaker.

and who has shown favor to me before the king, his counselors, and all his powerful officers. So I took courage because I was strengthened by the hand of the LORD my God,[fn] and I gathered Israelite leaders to return with me.

I told them how the gracious hand of my God had been on me, and what the king had said to me.

They said, “Let’s start rebuilding,” and their hands were strengthened[fn] to do this good work.

For they were all trying to intimidate us, saying, “They will drop their hands from[fn] the work, and it will never be finished.”

But now, my God, strengthen my hands.

Can your wealth[fn] or all your physical exertion

keep you from distress?

Look, God shows himself exalted by his power.

Who is a teacher like him?

Rise up, LORD! Do not let mere humans prevail;

let the nations be judged in your presence.

Wait for the LORD;

be strong, and let your heart be courageous.

Wait for the LORD.

Be strong, and let your heart be courageous,

all you who put your hope in the LORD.

But my enemies are vigorous and powerful;[fn]

many hate me for no reason.

They adopt[fn] an evil plan;

they talk about hiding traps and say,

“Who will see them? ”[fn]

Those who hate me without cause

are more numerous than the hairs of my head;

my deceitful enemies, who would destroy me,

are powerful.

Though I did not steal, I must repay.

You divided the sea with your strength;

you smashed the heads of the sea monsters in the water;

the root[fn] your right hand planted,

the son[fn] that you made strong for yourself.

Let your hand be with the man at your right hand,

with the son of man

you have made strong for yourself.

You have a mighty arm;

your hand is powerful;

your right hand is lifted high.

For as high as the heavens are above the earth,

so great is his faithful love

toward those who fear him.

Seek the LORD and his strength;

seek his face always.

The LORD[fn] made his people very fruitful;

he made them more numerous than their foes,

For his faithful love to us is great;

the LORD’s faithfulness endures forever.

Hallelujah!

This wondrous knowledge is beyond me.

It is lofty; I am unable to reach it.
