“She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
Just then some men[fn] brought to him a paralytic lying on a stretcher. Seeing their faith, Jesus told the paralytic, “Have courage, son, your sins are forgiven.”
“But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” — then he told the paralytic, “Get up, take your stretcher, and go home.”
“For this is my blood of the covenant,[fn] which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
John came baptizing[fn] in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.

“If you were blind,” Jesus told them, “you wouldn’t have sin. But now that you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.
“If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now they have no excuse for their sin.
“If I had not done the works among them that no one else has done, they would not be guilty of sin. Now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.
“You would have no authority over me at all,” Jesus answered him, “if it hadn’t been given you from above. This is why the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.”
“If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
“God exalted this man to his right hand as ruler and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.
He knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them! ” And after saying this, he fell asleep.
“All the prophets testify about him that through his name everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins.”
