“But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a person.

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You pay a tenth of[fn] mint, dill, and cumin, and yet you have neglected the more important matters of the law ​— ​justice, mercy, and faithfulness.[fn] These things should have been done without neglecting the others.

“Again he sent another servant to them, and they[fn] hit him on the head and treated him shamefully.[fn]

Yet, when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe it.

And they went and reported it to the rest, who did not believe them either.

“Then he will answer from inside and say, ‘Don’t bother me! The door is already locked, and my children and I have gone to bed. I can’t get up to give you anything.’

“But woe to you Pharisees! You give a tenth[fn] of mint, rue, and every kind of herb, and you bypass[fn] justice and love for God.[fn] These things you should have done without neglecting the others.

“He sent yet another servant, but they beat that one too, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.

Then he will show you a large, furnished room upstairs. Make the preparations there.”

When they reached Ephesus he left them there, but he himself entered the synagogue and debated with the Jews.

And even they, if they do not remain in unbelief, will be grafted in, because God has the power to graft them in again.

Now these things took place as examples for us, so that we will not desire evil things as they did.[fn]

if we endure, we will also reign with him;

if we deny him, he will also deny us;

For we also have received the good news just as they did. But the message they heard did not benefit them, since they were not united with those who heard it in faith.[fn]
