It was subject to the Jews from the time of the Maccabees. It had a celebrated but dangerous port and carried on a flourishing trade; now Yafa (not Jaffa): Acts 9:36, 38, 42; Acts 10:5, 8, 23, 32; Acts 11:5, 13. Cf.
