and sent them to the Lord, asking, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else? ”
When the men reached him, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to ask you, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else? ’ ”
They answered, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, that one of the ancient prophets has come back.”[fn]
“He will come and kill those farmers and give the vineyard to others.”
But when they heard this they said, “That must never happen! ”
About an hour later, another kept insisting, “This man was certainly with him, since he’s also a Galilean.”
The people stood watching, and even the leaders were scoffing: “He saved others; let him save himself if this is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One! ”
“I sent you to reap what you didn’t labor for; others have labored, and you have benefited from[fn] their labor.”
“Sir,” the disabled man answered, “I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I’m coming, someone goes down ahead of me.”
“There is another who testifies about me, and I know that the testimony he gives about me is true.
“I have come in my Father’s name, and yet you don’t accept me. If someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.
The next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side of the sea saw there had been only one boat.[fn] They also saw that Jesus had not boarded the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone off alone.
Some boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
And there was a lot of murmuring about him among the crowds. Some were saying, “He’s a good man.” Others were saying, “No, on the contrary, he’s deceiving the people.”
Others said, “This is the Messiah.” But some said, “Surely the Messiah doesn’t come from Galilee, does he?
Some said, “He’s the one.” Others were saying, “No, but he looks like him.”
He kept saying, “I’m the one.”
Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, because he doesn’t keep the Sabbath.” But others were saying, “How can a sinful man perform such signs? ” And there was a division among them.
“But I have other sheep that are not from this sheep pen; I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. Then there will be one flock, one shepherd.
Others were saying, “These aren’t the words of someone who is demon-possessed. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind? ”
The crowd standing there heard it and said it was thunder. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.”
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor[fn] to be with you forever.
“If I had not done the works among them that no one else has done, they would not be guilty of sin. Now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.
Simon Peter was following Jesus, as was another disciple. That disciple was an acquaintance of the high priest; so he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard.
But Peter remained standing outside by the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the girl who was the doorkeeper and brought Peter in.
Jesus answered, “Are you asking this on your own, or have others told you about me? ”
There they crucified him and two others with him, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle.
So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with him.
So she went running to Simon Peter and to the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said to them, “They’ve taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they’ve put him! ”
The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and got to the tomb first.
The other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, then also went in, saw, and believed.
So the other disciples were telling him, “We’ve seen the Lord! ”
But he said to them, “If I don’t see the mark of the nails in his hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe.”
Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book.
Simon Peter, Thomas (called “Twin”[fn]), Nathanael from Cana of Galilee, Zebedee’s sons, and two others of his disciples were together.
Since they were not far from land (about a hundred yards[fn] away), the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish.
“Truly I tell you, when you were younger, you would tie your belt and walk wherever you wanted. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will tie you and carry you where you don’t want to go.”
And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which, if every one of them were written down, I suppose not even the world itself could contain the books[fn] that would be written.
They were all astounded and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean? ”
“There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved.”
After Paul and Barnabas had engaged them in serious argument and debate, Paul and Barnabas and some others were appointed to go up to the apostles and elders in Jerusalem about this issue.
Some were shouting one thing and some another, because the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together.
Some in the crowd were shouting one thing and some another. Since he was not able to get reliable information because of the uproar, he ordered him to be taken into the barracks.
I did, in fact, baptize the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don’t recall if I baptized anyone else.
According to God’s grace that was given to me, I have laid a foundation as a skilled master builder,[fn] and another builds on it. But each one is to be careful how he builds on it.
For no one can lay any foundation other than what has been laid down. That foundation is Jesus Christ.
If I am not an apostle to others, at least I am to you, because you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.
If others have this right to receive benefits from you, don’t we even more? Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right; instead, we endure everything so that we will not hinder the gospel of Christ.
Instead, I discipline my body and bring it under strict control, so that after preaching to others, I myself will not be disqualified.
