Now the word of the LORD came to him: “This one will not be your heir; instead, one who comes from your own body[fn] will be your heir.”
God said to Abraham, “As for your wife Sarai, do not call her Sarai, for Sarah[fn] will be her name.
Sarah denied it. “I did not laugh,” she said, because she was afraid.
But he replied, “No, you did laugh.”
and said, “My lords, turn aside to your servant’s house, wash your feet, and spend the night. Then you can get up early and go on your way.”
“No,” they said. “We would rather spend the night in the square.”
“Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father though not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife.
“Swear to me by God here and now, that you will not break an agreement with me or with my children and descendants. As I have been loyal to you, so you will be loyal to me and to the country where you are a resident alien.”
Abimelech replied, “I don’t know who did this thing. You didn’t report anything to me, so I hadn’t heard about it until today.”
He was afraid and said, “What an awesome place this is! This is none other than the house of God. This is the gate of heaven.”
“Your name will no longer be Jacob,” he said. “It will be Israel[fn] because you have struggled with God and with men and have prevailed.”
God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; you will no longer be named Jacob, but your name will be Israel.” So he named him Israel.
Judah replied, “Let her keep the items for herself; otherwise we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send this young goat, but you couldn’t find her.”
“But when all goes well for you, remember that I was with you. Please show kindness to me by mentioning me to Pharaoh, and get me out of this prison.
“For I was kidnapped from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing that they should put me in the dungeon.”[fn]
“Bring back your youngest brother to me, and I will know that you are not spies but honest men. I will then give your brother back to you, and you can trade in the country.’ ”
“We told him, ‘We cannot go down unless our younger brother goes with us. If our younger brother isn’t with us, we cannot see the man.’
Joseph could no longer keep his composure in front of all his attendants,[fn] so he called out, “Send everyone away from me! ” No one was with him when he revealed his identity to his brothers.
“Therefore it was not you who sent me here, but God. He has made me a father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household, and ruler over all the land of Egypt.
When that year was over, they came the next year and said to him, “We cannot hide from our lord that the silver is gone and that all our livestock belongs to our lord. There is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land.
“When I rest with my ancestors, carry me away from Egypt and bury me in their burial place.”
Joseph answered, “I will do what you have asked.”
Pharaoh responded, “I will let you go and sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness, but don’t go very far. Make an appeal for me.”
Moses responded, “You must also let us have[fn] sacrifices and burnt offerings to prepare for the LORD our God.
“Do not eat any of it raw or cooked in boiling[fn] water, but only roasted over fire — its head as well as its legs and inner organs.
Moses continued, “The LORD will give you meat to eat this evening and all the bread you want in the morning, for he has heard the complaints that you are raising against him. Who are we? Your complaints are not against us but against the LORD.”
But they didn’t listen to Moses; some people left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and stank. Therefore Moses was angry with them.
“But if he did not intend any harm,[fn] and yet God allowed it to happen, I will appoint a place for you where he may flee.
“If you see the donkey of someone who hates you lying helpless under its load, and you want to refrain from helping it, you must help with it.[fn]
“Do not bow in worship to their gods, and do not serve them. Do not imitate their practices. Instead, demolish them[fn] and smash their sacred pillars to pieces.
But Moses replied,
It’s not the sound of a victory cry
and not the sound of a cry of defeat;
I hear the sound of singing!
“How will it be known that I and your people have found favor with you unless you go with us? I and your people will be distinguished by this from all the other people on the face of the earth.”
“But you may eat these kinds of all the winged insects that walk on all fours: those that have jointed legs above their feet for hopping on the ground.
“He is not to marry a widow, a divorced woman, or one defiled by prostitution. He is to marry a virgin from his own people,
“if you reject my statutes and despise my ordinances, and do not observe all my commands — and break my covenant,
“If in spite of these things you do not accept my discipline, but act with hostility toward me,
“When the field is released in the Jubilee, it will be holy to the LORD like a field permanently set apart; it becomes the priest’s property.
“No person who has been set apart for destruction is to be ransomed; he must be put to death.
But he replied to him, “I don’t want to go. Instead, I will go to my own land and my relatives.”
“However, the people living in the land are strong, and the cities are large and fortified. We also saw the descendants of Anak there.
Then Caleb quieted the people in the presence of Moses and said, “Let’s go up now and take possession of the land because we can certainly conquer it! ”
“We even saw the Nephilim there — the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim! To ourselves we seemed like grasshoppers, and we must have seemed the same to them.”
“Only don’t rebel against the LORD, and don’t be afraid of the people of the land, for we will devour them. Their protection has been removed from them, and the LORD is with us. Don’t be afraid of them! ”
