He was in the world, and the world was created through him, and yet the world did not recognize him.
(John testified concerning him and exclaimed, “This was the one of whom I said, ‘The one coming after me ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’ ”)
“This is the one I told you about: ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’
“Come and you’ll see,” he replied. So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon.[fn]
Now six stone water jars had been set there for Jewish purification. Each contained twenty or thirty gallons.[fn]
While he was in Jerusalem during the Passover Festival, many believed in his name when they saw the signs he was doing.

Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, worn out from his journey, sat down at the well. It was about noon.[fn]
He went again to Cana of Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. There was a certain royal official whose son was ill at Capernaum.
Instantly the man got well, picked up his mat, and started to walk.
Now that day was the Sabbath,
“John[fn] was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.
Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.”
There was plenty of grass in that place; so they sat down. The men numbered about five thousand.
The next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side of the sea saw there had been only one boat.[fn] They also saw that Jesus had not boarded the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone off alone.
And there was a lot of murmuring about him among the crowds. Some were saying, “He’s a good man.” Others were saying, “No, on the contrary, he’s deceiving the people.”
“Doesn’t the Scripture say that the Messiah comes from David’s offspring[fn] and from the town of Bethlehem, where David lived? ”
“Our father is Abraham,” they replied.
“If you were Abraham’s children,” Jesus told them, “you would do what Abraham did.
Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, because I came from God and I am here. For I didn’t come on my own, but he sent me.
“You are of your father the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature,[fn] because he is a liar and the father of lies.
His neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar said, “Isn’t this the one who used to sit begging? ”
Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, because he doesn’t keep the Sabbath.” But others were saying, “How can a sinful man perform such signs? ” And there was a division among them.
The Jews did not believe this about him — that he was blind and received sight — until they summoned the parents of the one who had received his sight.
So a second time they summoned the man who had been blind and told him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.”
“If you were blind,” Jesus told them, “you wouldn’t have sin. But now that you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.
Jesus gave them this figure of speech, but they did not understand what he was telling them.
