The birth of Jesus Christ came about this way: After his mother Mary had been engaged[fn] to Joseph, it was discovered before they came together that she was pregnant from the Holy Spirit.
“Don’t think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
“For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter[fn] or one stroke of a letter will pass away from the law until all things are accomplished.
“No one can serve two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
“So don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat? ’ or ‘What will we drink? ’ or ‘What will we wear? ’
“Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the splinter out of your eye,’ and look, there’s a beam of wood in your own eye?
“You’ll recognize them by their fruit. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes or figs from thistles?
“When you enter any town or village, find out who is worthy, and stay there until you leave.
“If anyone does not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that house or town.
“Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.
“But when they hand you over, don’t worry about how or what you are to speak. For you will be given what to say at that hour,
“The one who loves a father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; the one who loves a son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
“But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
“But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”
“Or haven’t you read in the law that on Sabbath days the priests in the temple violate the Sabbath and are innocent?
Knowing their thoughts, he told them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is headed for destruction, and no city or house divided against itself will stand.
“How can someone enter a strong man’s house and steal his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.
“Either make the tree good and its fruit will be good, or make the tree bad[fn] and its fruit will be bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.
“But he has no root and is short-lived. When distress or persecution comes because of the word, immediately he falls away.
“For God said:[fn] Honor your father and your mother; and, Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.
“But you say, ‘Whoever tells his father or mother, “Whatever benefit you might have received from me is a gift committed to the temple,”
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
“For what will it benefit someone if he gains the whole world yet loses his life? Or what will anyone give in exchange for his life?
“If your hand or your foot causes you to fall away, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or lame than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into the eternal fire.
“And if your eye causes you to fall away, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hellfire.[fn]
“And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he rejoices over that sheep[fn] more than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray.
“But if he won’t listen, take one or two others with you, so that by the testimony[fn] of two or three witnesses every fact may be established.
“Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”
“And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother[fn] or children or fields because of my name will receive a hundred times more and will inherit eternal life.
“Did John’s baptism come from heaven, or was it of human origin? ”
They discussed it among themselves, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him? ’
“Blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctified the gold?
“Blind people![fn] For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift?
“If anyone tells you then, ‘See, here is the Messiah! ’ or, ‘Over here! ’ do not believe it.
“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?
“Then they too will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or without clothes, or sick, or in prison, and not help you? ’
“Or do you think that I cannot call on my Father, and he will provide me here and now with more than twelve legions of angels?
So when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Who is it you want me to release for you — Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ? ”
“Which is easier: to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat, and walk’?
