He answered, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
As he was telling them these things, suddenly one of the leaders came and knelt down before him, saying, “My daughter just died,[fn] but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”
“I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob? He[fn] is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”
But Jesus kept silent. The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”
and said, “Sir, we remember that while this deceiver was still alive he said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’
and begged him earnestly, “My little daughter is dying. Come and lay your hands on her so that she can get well[fn] and live.”
Yet, when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe it.
There was also a prophetess, Anna, a daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was well along in years, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage,[fn]
“Not many days later, the younger son gathered together all he had and traveled to a distant country, where he squandered his estate in foolish living.
“But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ ”
“He is not the God of the dead but of the living, because all are living to[fn] him.”
So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground.
“Why are you looking for the living among the dead? ” asked the men.
“and when they didn’t find his body, they came and reported that they had seen a vision of angels who said he was alive.
Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God, and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would ask him, and he would give you living water.”
“Sir,” said the woman, “you don’t even have a bucket, and the well is deep. So where do you get this ‘living water’?
“Go,” Jesus told him, “your son will live.” The man believed what[fn] Jesus said to him and departed.
The father realized this was the very hour at which Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” So he himself believed, along with his whole household.
“Truly I tell you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
“I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
“Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.
“This is the bread that came down from heaven; it is not like the manna[fn] your ancestors ate — and they died. The one who eats this bread will live forever.”
“The one who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, will have streams of living water flow from deep within him.”
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me, even if he dies, will live.
“In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Because I live, you will live too.
After he had suffered, he also presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
“He is the one who was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors. He received living oracles to give to us.
He gave her his hand and helped her stand up. He called the saints and widows and presented her alive.
“He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be the judge of the living and the dead.
“People! Why are you doing these things? We are people also, just like you, and we are proclaiming good news to you, that you turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything in them.
“For in him we live and move and have our being, as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also his offspring.’
They listened to him up to this point. Then they raised their voices, shouting, “Wipe this man off the face of the earth! He should not be allowed to live! ”
“Instead they had some disagreements with him about their own religion and about a certain Jesus, a dead man Paul claimed to be alive.
Then Festus said, “King Agrippa and all men present with us, you see this man. The whole Jewish community has appealed to me concerning him, both in Jerusalem and here, shouting that he should not live any longer.
“They have known me for a long time, if they are willing to testify, that according to the strictest sect of our religion I lived as a Pharisee.
When the local people saw the snake hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “This man, no doubt, is a murderer. Even though he has escaped the sea, Justice has not allowed him to live.”
For the death he died, he died to sin once for all time; but the life he lives, he lives to God.
And do not offer any parts[fn] of it to sin as weapons for unrighteousness. But as those who are alive from the dead, offer yourselves to God, and all the parts of yourselves to God as weapons for righteousness.
Since I am speaking to those who know the law, brothers and sisters, don’t you know that the law rules over someone as long as he lives?
For example, a married woman is legally bound to her husband while he lives. But if her husband dies, she is released from the law regarding the husband.
