But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
See, the virgin will become pregnant
and give birth to a son,
and they will name him Immanuel,
which is translated “God is with us.”
saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star at its rising and have come to worship him.”[fn]
For he is the one spoken of through the prophet Isaiah, who said:
A voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
Prepare the way for the Lord;
make his paths straight!
Jesus answered him, “Allow it for now, because this is the way for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John allowed him to be baptized.
“Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.
“But I tell you, don’t take an oath at all: either by heaven, because it is God’s throne;
“or by the earth, because it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King.
“But let your ‘yes’ mean ‘yes,’ and your ‘no’ mean ‘no.’ Anything more than this is from the evil one.
“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light.
“But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light within you is darkness, how deep is that darkness!
“Therefore I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing?
“Therefore, whatever you want others to do for you, do also the same for them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the sea obey him! ”
“Go and learn what this means: I desire mercy and not sacrifice. For I didn’t come to call the righteous, but sinners.”[fn]

“Don’t take a traveling bag for the road, or an extra shirt, sandals, or a staff, for the worker is worthy of his food.

“The one who loves a father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; the one who loves a son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
“This is the one about whom it is written:
See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you;
he will prepare your way before you.
“Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one greater than John the Baptist has appeared,[fn] but the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
“To what should I compare this generation? It’s like children sitting in the marketplaces who call out to other children:
“If you had known what this means, I desire mercy and not sacrifice, you would not have condemned the innocent.
“Anyone who is not with me is against me, and anyone who does not gather with me scatters.
He replied to the one who was speaking to him, “Who is my mother and who are my brothers? ”
“For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
“When anyone hears the word about the kingdom and doesn’t understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the one sown along the path.
“And the one sown on rocky ground — this is one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy.
“But he has no root and is short-lived. When distress or persecution comes because of the word, immediately he falls away.
“Now the one sown among the thorns — this is one who hears the word, but the worries of this age and the deceitfulness[fn] of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
“But the one sown on the good ground — this is one who hears and understands the word, who does produce fruit and yields: some a hundred, some sixty, some thirty times what was sown.”
