Ἐμμανουήλ, , Immanuel, (from עִמָּנוּ and אֵל; God with us), equivalent to savior, a name given to Christ by Matthew, Matthew 1:23, after Isaiah 7:14. According to the orthodox interpretation the name denotes the same as θεάνθρωπος, and has reference to the personal union of the human nature and the divine in Christ. [See BB. DD. under the word.]
