“When a fire gets out of control, spreads to thornbushes, and consumes stacks of cut grain, standing grain, or a field, the one who started the fire must make full restitution for what was burned.

Now the people began complaining openly before[fn] the LORD about hardship. When the LORD heard, his anger burned, and fire from the LORD blazed among them and consumed the outskirts of the camp.

So that place was named Taberah,[fn] because the LORD’s fire had blazed among them.

“The LORD will not be willing to forgive him. Instead, his anger and jealousy will burn against that person, and every curse written in this scroll will descend on him. The LORD will blot out his name under heaven,

“For fire has been kindled because of my anger

and burns to the depths of Sheol;

it devours the land and its produce,

and scorches the foundations of the mountains.

Smoke rose from his nostrils,

and consuming fire came from his mouth;

coals were set ablaze by it.[fn]

From the radiance of his presence,

blazing coals were ignited.

The LORD’s anger burned against Israel again, and he stirred up David against them to say, “Go, count the people of Israel and Judah.”

“This is what the LORD says:[fn] ‘I am about to bring disaster on you and will eradicate your descendants:

I will wipe out all of Ahab’s males,[fn]

both slave and free,[fn] in Israel;

“Go and inquire of the LORD for me, for the people, and for all Judah about the words in this book that has been found. For great is the LORD’s wrath that is kindled against us because our ancestors have not obeyed the words of this book in order to do everything written about us.”

“because they have abandoned me and burned incense to other gods in order to anger me with all the work of their hands. My wrath will be kindled against this place, and it will not be quenched.’

“Go and inquire of the LORD for me and for those remaining in Israel and Judah, concerning the words of the book that was found. For great is the LORD’s wrath that is poured out on us because our ancestors have not kept the word of the LORD in order to do everything written in this book.”

“because they have abandoned me and burned incense to other gods so as to anger me with all the works of their hands. My wrath will be poured out on this place, and it will not be quenched.’

We have cast lots among the priests, Levites, and people for the donation of wood by our ancestral families[fn] at the appointed times each year. They are to bring the wood to our God’s house to burn on the altar of the LORD our God, as it is written in the law.

There the wicked cease to make trouble,

and there the weary find rest.

Pay homage to[fn] the Son or he will be angry

and you will perish in your rebellion,[fn]

for his anger may ignite at any moment.

All who take refuge in him are happy.

My heart grew hot within me;

as I mused, a fire burned.

I spoke with my tongue:

When I became embittered

and my innermost being[fn] was wounded,

Yet he was compassionate;

he atoned for their iniquity

and did not destroy them.

He often turned his anger aside

and did not unleash[fn] all his wrath.

How long, LORD? Will you hide forever?

Will your anger keep burning like fire?

Fire blazed throughout their assembly;

flames consumed the wicked.

They surrounded me like bees;

they were extinguished like a fire among thorns;

in the name of the LORD I destroyed them.

a lying witness who gives false testimony,

and one who stirs up trouble among brothers.

An honest witness does not deceive,

but a dishonest witness utters lies.

A truthful witness rescues lives,

but one who utters lies is deceitful.

Look, all you who kindle a fire,

who encircle yourselves with[fn] torches;

walk in the light of your fire

and of the torches you have lit!

This is what you’ll get from my hand:

you will lie down in a place of torment.

Then the LORD said to me, “Disaster will be poured out[fn] from the north on all who live in the land.

Circumcise yourselves to the LORD;

remove the foreskin of your hearts,

men of Judah and residents of Jerusalem.

Otherwise, my wrath will break out like fire

and burn with no one to extinguish it

because of your evil deeds.

Then I will make you serve your enemies[fn]

in a land you do not know,

for my anger will kindle a fire

that will burn against you.

“So my fierce wrath poured out and burned in Judah’s cities and Jerusalem’s streets so that they became the desolate ruin they are today.

“Then all humanity will see that I, the LORD, have kindled it. It will not be extinguished.’ ”

Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with rage, and the expression on his face changed toward Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He gave orders to heat the furnace seven times more than was customary,

Since the king’s command was so urgent[fn] and the furnace extremely hot, the raging flames[fn] killed those men who carried up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

Then the house of Jacob will be a blazing fire,

and the house of Joseph, a burning flame,

but the house of Esau will be stubble;

Jacob[fn] will set them on fire and consume Edom.[fn]

Therefore no survivor will remain

of the house of Esau,

for the LORD has spoken.

Beware, I am against you.

This is the declaration of the LORD of Armies.

I will make your chariots go up in smoke,[fn]

and the sword will devour your young lions.

I will cut off your prey from the earth,

and the sound of your messengers

will never be heard again.
