“And don’t presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones.

“You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden.

“Do not swear by your head, because you cannot make a single hair white or black.

“No one can serve two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

“Can any of you add one moment to his life span[fn] by worrying?

“A good tree can’t produce bad fruit; neither can a bad tree produce good fruit.

Right away a man with leprosy[fn] came up and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests[fn] be sad while the groom is with them? The time[fn] will come when the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.

When he entered the house, the blind men approached him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I can do this? ”

They said to him, “Yes, Lord.”

“Don’t fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul; rather, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

“How can someone enter a strong man’s house and steal his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.

“Brood of vipers! How can you speak good things when you are evil? For the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.

“And in the morning, ‘Today will be stormy because the sky is red and threatening.’ You[fn] know how to read the appearance of the sky, but you can’t read the signs of the times.[fn]

“I brought him to your disciples, but they couldn’t heal him.”

Then the disciples approached Jesus privately and said, “Why couldn’t we drive it out? ”

“For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother’s womb, there are eunuchs who were made by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves that way because of the kingdom of heaven. The one who is able to accept it should accept it.”

When the disciples heard this, they were utterly astonished and asked, “Then who can be saved? ”

Jesus answered, “You don’t know what you’re asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink? ”[fn]

“We are able,” they said to him.

No one was able to answer him at all,[fn] and from that day no one dared to question him anymore.

“This might have been sold for a great deal and given to the poor.”

Again, a second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this[fn] cannot pass[fn] unless I drink it, your will be done.”

“Or do you think that I cannot call on my Father, and he will provide me here and now with more than twelve legions of angels?

stated, “This man said, ‘I can destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’ ”

“He saved others, but he cannot save himself! He is the King of Israel! Let him[fn] come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.

Then a man with leprosy[fn] came to him and, on his knees,[fn] begged him, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”

Yet he went out and began to proclaim it widely and to spread the news, with the result that Jesus could no longer enter a town openly. But he was out in deserted places, and they came to him from everywhere.

Since they were not able to bring him to[fn] Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and after digging through it, they lowered the mat on which the paralytic was lying.

“Why does he speak like this? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone? ”

Jesus said to them, “The wedding guests cannot fast while the groom is with them, can they? As long as they have the groom with them, they cannot fast.

Jesus entered a house, and the crowd gathered again so that they were not even able to eat.[fn]

So he summoned them and spoke to them in parables: “How can Satan drive out Satan?

“And when sown, it comes up and grows taller than all the garden plants, and produces large branches, so that the birds of the sky can nest in its shade.”

He lived in the tombs, and no one was able to restrain him anymore ​— ​not even with a chain ​— ​

He was not able to do a miracle there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them.

So Herodias held a grudge against him and wanted to kill him. But she could not,

“Nothing that goes into a person from outside can defile him but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.”[fn]

He said to them, “Are you also as lacking in understanding? Don’t you realize that nothing going into a person from the outside can defile him?

He got up and departed from there to the region of Tyre.[fn] He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it, but he could not escape notice.

His disciples answered him, “Where can anyone get enough bread here in this desolate place to feed these people? ”

and his clothes became dazzling ​— ​extremely white as no launderer on earth could whiten them.

“And many times it has thrown him into fire or water to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”

After he had gone into the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out? ”

“Don’t stop him,” said Jesus, “because there is no one who will perform a miracle in my name who can soon afterward speak evil of me.
