He fled with all his possessions, crossed the Euphrates, and headed for[fn] the hill country of Gilead.
“This mound is a witness and the marker is a witness that I will not pass beyond this mound to you, and you will not pass beyond this mound and this marker to do me harm.
“I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. Indeed, I crossed over the Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two camps.
During the night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two slave women, and his eleven sons, and crossed the ford of Jabbok.
“Why are you discouraging the Israelites from crossing into the land the LORD has given them?
Moses told them, “If the Gadites and Reubenites cross the Jordan with you, every man in battle formation before the LORD, and the land is subdued before you, you are to give them the land of Gilead as a possession.
“But if they don’t go across with you in battle formation, they must accept land in Canaan with you.”

Then the men returned, came down from the hill country, and crossed the Jordan. They went to Joshua son of Nun and reported everything that had happened to them.
Joshua started early the next morning and left the Acacia Grove[fn] with all the Israelites. They went as far as the Jordan and stayed there before crossing.

and after everyone had finished crossing, the priests with the ark of the LORD crossed in the sight of the people.
The Reubenites, Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh went in battle formation in front of the Israelites, as Moses had instructed them.
About forty thousand equipped for war crossed to the plains of Jericho in the LORD’s presence.
