Strong’s Definitions [?](Strong’s Definitions Legend)
δέ dé, deh; a primary particle (adversative or continuative); but, and, etc.:—also, and, but, moreover, now (often unexpressed in English).
STRONGS G1161:
δέ (related to δή, as μέν to μήν, cf. Klotz ad Devar. ii. 2, p. 355), a particle adversative, distinctive, disjunctive, but, moreover (Winers Grammar, § 53, 7 and 10, 2); it is much more frequent in the historical parts of the N. T. than in the other books, very rare in the Epistles of John and the Apocalypse. [On its general neglect of elision (when the next word begins with a vowel) cf. Tdf. Proleg., p. 96; WHs Appendix, p. 146; Winers Grammar, § 5, 1 a.; Buttmann, p. 10f] It is used:
1. universally, by way of opposition and distinction; it is added to statements opposed to a preceding statement: ἐὰν γὰρ ἀφῆτε... ἐὰν δὲ μὴ ἀφῆτε, Matthew 6:14f; ἐὰν δὲ ὀφθαλμὸς κτλ. Matthew 6:23; ἐλεύσονται δὲ ἡμέραι, Mark 2:20; it opposes persons to persons or things previously mentioned or thought of — either with strong emphasis: ἐγὼ δέ, Matthew 5:22, 28, 32, 34, 39, 44; ἡμεῖς δέ, 1 Corinthians 1:23; 2 Corinthians 10:13; σὺ δέ, Matthew 6:6; ὑμεῖς δέ, Mark 8:29; οἱ δὲ υἱοὶ τῆς βασιλείας, Matthew 8:12; αἱ ἀλώπεκες... δὲ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρ. Matthew 8:20; Luke 9:58; πᾶς λαὸς... οἱ δὲ φαρισαῖοι, Luke 7:29f; δὲ πνευματικός, 1 Corinthians 2:15, and often; — or with a slight discrimination, δέ, αὐτὸς δέ: Mark 1:45; Mark 5:34; Mark 6:37; Mark 7:6; Matthew 13:29, 37, 52; Matthew 15:23ff; Luke 4:40, 43; Luke 5:16; Luke 6:8; Luke 8:10, 54; Luke 15:29; οἱ δέ, Matthew 2:5; Mark 3:4; Mark 8:28, etc., etc.; with the addition also of a proper name, as δὲ Ἰησοῦς: Matthew 8:22 [Tdf. omits .]; Matt 9:12 [R G Tr brackets]; Matt 9:22 [Tdf. omits .]; Matt 13:57; Mark 1:41 [R G L marginal reading Tr marginal reading]; ἀποκρ. δὲ () Σίμων, Luke 7:43 R G L brackets; δὲ Μαρία, Luke 2:19, etc.
2. μὲν... δέ, see μέν.
3. after negative sentences, but, but rather (German wohl aber): Matthew 6:19f (μή θησαυρίζετε... θησαυρίζετε δέ); Matt 10:5f; Acts 12:9, 14; Romans 3:4; Romans 4:5; 1 Corinthians 1:10; 1 Corinthians 7:37; 1 Thessalonians 5:21 [not Rec.]; Ephesians 4:14; Hebrews 2:5; Hebrews 4:13, 15; Hebrews 9:12; Hebrews 10:26; Hebrews 12:13; 1 Peter 1:12 (οὐχ ἑαυτοῖς ὑμῖν [Rec. ἡμ.] δέ); James 1:13; James 2:11.
4. it is joined to terms which are repeated with a certain emphasis, and with such additions as tend to explain and establish them more exactly; in this use of the particle we may supply a suppressed negative clause [and give its force in English by inserting I say, and that, so then, etc.]: Romans 3:21f (not that common δικαιοσύνη which the Jews boasted of and strove after, but δικαιοσ. διὰ πίστεως); Romans 9:30; 1 Corinthians 2:6 (σοφίαν δέ οὐ τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου); Galatians 2:2 (I went up, not of my own accord, but etc.); Philippians 2:8; cf. Klotz ad Dev. ii. 2, p. 361f; L. Dindorf in Stephanus Thesaurus ii. col. 928; [cf. Winer's Grammar, 443 (412)].
5. it serves to mark a transition to something new (δέ metabatic); by this use of the particle, the new addition is distinguished from and, as it were, opposed to what goes before: Matthew 1:18; Matthew 2:19; Matthew 10:21; Luke 12:13; Luke 13:1; John 7:14, 37; Acts 6:1; Romans 8:28; 1 Corinthians 7:1; 1 Corinthians 8:1, etc., etc.; so also in the phrase ἐγένετο δέ, see γίνομαι, 2 c.
6. it introduces explanations and separates them from the things to be explained: John 3:19; John 6:39; 1 Corinthians 1:12; 1 Corinthians 7:6, 29; Ephesians 5:32, etc.; — especially remarks and explanations intercalated into the discourse, or added, as it were, by way of appendix: Mark 5:13 (ἦσαν δέ etc. R L brackets); Mark 15:25; 16:8 [R G]; John 6:10; John 9:14; John 12:3; τοῦτο δὲ γέγονε, Matthew 1:22; Matthew 21:4. Owing to this use, the particle not infrequently came to be confounded in the manuscripts (of secular writings also) with γάρ; cf. Winer on Galatians 1:11; Fritzsche on Mark 14:2; also his Commentary on Romans, vol. i., pp. 234, 265; ii., p. 476; iii., p. 196; [Winers Grammar, 452 (421); Buttmann, 363 (312)].
7. after a parenthesis or an explanation which had led away from the subject under discussion, it serves to take up the discourse again [cf. Winer's Grammar, 443 (412)]: Matthew 3:4; Luke 4:1; Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 2:12; 2 Corinthians 5:8; 2 Corinthians 10:2; Ephesians 2:4; cf. Klotz ad Devar. ii. 2, p. 376f.
8. it introduces the apodosis and, as it were, opposes it to the protasis: Acts 11:17 R G (1 Macc. 14:29; 2 Macc. 1:34); after a participial construction which has the force of a protasis: Colossians 1:22 (Colossians 1:21); cf. Matthiae 2:1470; Kühner, 2:818; [Jelf, § 770]; Klotz as above, p. 370f; [Buttmann, 364 (312)].
9. καὶ... δέ, but... also, yea and, moreover also: Matthew 10:18; Matthew 16:18; Luke 2:35 [WH text omits; L Tr brackets δέ]; John 6:51; John 15:27; Acts 3:24; Acts 22:29; Romans 11:23; 2 Timothy 3:12; 1 John 1:3; 2 Peter 1:5; cf. Klotz as above, p. 645f; Buttmann, 364 (312); [also Winer's Grammar, 443 (413); Ellicott on 1 Timothy 3:10; Meyer on John 6:51]. καὶ ἐάν δέ yea even if: John 8:16.
10. δέ never stands as the first word in the sentence, but generally second; and when the words to which it is added cannot be separated, it stands third (as in Matthew 10:11; Matthew 18:25; Mark 4:34; Luke 10:31; Acts 17:6; Acts 28:6; Galatians 3:23; 2 Timothy 3:8, etc.; in οὐ μόνον δέ, Romans 5:3, 11, etc.), or even in the fourth place, Matthew 10:18; John 6:51; John 8:16; 1 John 1:3; 1 Corinthians 4:18; [Luke 22:69 L T Tr WH].

Unchecked Copy Box1Co 1:18 - For G1063 the preaching G3056 of the cross G4716 is G2076 to them G3303 that perish G622 foolishness; G3472 but G1161 unto us G2254 which are saved G4982 it is G2076 the power G1411 of God. G2316

Unchecked Copy Box1Co 2:12 - Now G1161 we G2249 have received, G2983 not G3756 the spirit G4151 of the world, G2889 but G235 the spirit G4151 which G3588 is of G1537 God; G2316 that G2443 we might know G1492 the things that are freely given G5483 to us G2254 of G5259 God. G2316

Unchecked Copy Box1Co 3:23 - And G1161 ye G5210 are Christ's; G5547 and G1161 Christ G5547 is God's. G2316
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 4:2 -  G3739 G1161 Moreover G3063 it is required G2212 in G1722 stewards, G3623 that G2443 a man G5100 be found G2147 faithful. G4103
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 4:3 - But G1161 with me G1698 it is G2076 a very small thing G1519 G1646 that G2443 I should be judged G350 of G5259 you, G5216 or G2228 of G5259 man's G442 judgment: G2250 yea, G235 I judge G350 not G3761 mine own self. G1683
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 4:4 - For G1063 I know G4894 nothing G3762 by myself; G1683 yet G235 am I G1344  not G3756 hereby G1722 G5129 justified: G1344 but G1161 he that judgeth G350 me G3165 is G2076 the Lord. G2962
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 4:6 - And G1161 these things, G5023 brethren, G80 I have in a figure transferred G3345 to G1519 myself G1683 and G2532 to Apollos G625 for G1223 your sakes; G5209 that G2443 ye might learn G3129 in G1722 us G2254 not G3361 to think G5426 of men above G5228 that G2443 which G3739 is written, G1125 that no G3363 one G1520 of you be puffed up G5448 for G5228 one G1520 against G2596 another. G2087
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 4:7 - For G1063 who G5101 maketh G1252  thee G4571 to differ G1252 from another? and G1161 what G5101 hast thou G2192 that G3739 thou didst G2983  not G3756 receive? G2983 G1161 now if G1499 thou didst receive G2983 it, why G5101 dost thou glory, G2744 as G5613 if thou hadst G2983  not G3361 received G2983 it?
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 4:10 - We G2249 are fools G3474 for G1223  Christ's G5547 sake, G1223 but G1161 ye G5210 are wise G5429 in G1722 Christ; G5547 we G2249 are weak, G772 but G1161 ye G5210 are strong; G2478 ye G5210 are honourable, G1741 but G1161 we G2249 are despised. G820
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 4:18 - Now G1161 some G5100 are puffed up, G5448 as though G5613 I G3450 would G2064  not G3361 come G2064 to G4314 you. G5209
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 4:19 - But G1161 I will come G2064 to G4314 you G5209 shortly, G5030 if G1437 the Lord G2962 will, G2309 and G2532 will know, G1097 not G3756 the speech G3056 of them which are puffed up, G5448 but G235 the power. G1411
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 5:3 - For G1063 I G1473 verily, G3303 as G5613 absent G548 in body, G4983 but G1161 present G3918 in spirit, G4151 have judged G2919 already, G2235 as G5613 though I were present, G3918 concerning him that hath G2716  so G3779 done G2716 this deed, G5124
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 5:11 - But G1161 now G3570 I have written G1125 unto you G5213 not G3361 to keep company, G4874 if G1437 any man G5100 that is called G3687 a brother G80 be G2228 a fornicator, G4205 or G2228 covetous, G4123 or G2228 an idolater, G1496 or G2228 a railer, G3060 or G2228 a drunkard, G3183 or G2228 an extortioner; G727 with such an one G5108 no not G3366 to eat. G4906
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 5:13 - But G1161 them that are without G1854 God G2316 judgeth. G2919 Therefore G2532 put away G1808 from G1537 among yourselves G5216 that G846 wicked person. G4190
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 6:13 - Meats G1033 for the belly, G2836 and G2532 the belly G2836 for meats: G1033 but G1161 God G2316 shall destroy G2673 both G2532 it G5026 and G2532 them. G5023 Now G1161 the body G4983 is not G3756 for fornication, G4202 but G235 for the Lord; G2962 and G2532 the Lord G2962 for the body. G4983
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 6:14 - And G1161 God G2316 hath G1453  both G2532 raised up G1453 the Lord, G2962 and G2532  will G1825  also G2532 raise up G1825 us G2248 by G1223 his own G846 power. G1411
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 6:17 - But G1161 he that is joined G2853 unto the Lord G2962 is G2076 one G1520 spirit. G4151
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 6:18 - Flee G5343 fornication. G4202 Every G3956 sin G265 that G3739 G1437 a man G444 doeth G4160 is G2076 without G1622 the body; G4983 but G1161 he that committeth fornication G4203 sinneth G264 against G1519 his own G2398 body. G4983
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 7:1 - Now G1161 concerning G4012 the things whereof G3739 ye wrote G1125 unto me: G3427 It is good G2570 for a man G444 not G3361 to touch G680 a woman. G1135
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 7:2 - Nevertheless, G1223 G1161 to avoid fornication, G4202 let G2192  every man G1538 have G2192 his own G1438 wife, G1135 and G2532 let G2192  every woman G1538 have G2192 her own G2398 husband. G435
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 7:3 - Let G591  the husband G435 render G591 unto the wife G1135 due G3784 benevolence: G2133 and G1161 likewise G3668 also G2532 the wife G1135 unto the husband. G435
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 7:4 - The wife G1135 hath G1850  not G3756 power G1850 of her own G2398 body, G4983 but G235 the husband: G435 and G1161 likewise G3668 also G2532 the husband G435 hath G1850  not G3756 power G1850 of his own G2398 body, G4983 but G235 the wife. G1135
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 7:6 - But G1161 I speak G3004 this G5124 by G2596 permission, G4774 and not G3756 of G2596 commandment. G2003
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 7:7 - For G1063 I would G2309 that all G3956 men G444 were G1511 even G2532 as G5613 I myself. G1683 But G235 every man G1538 hath G2192 his proper G2398 gift G5486 of G1537 God, G2316 one G3739 G3303 after this manner, G3779 and G1161 another G3739 after that. G3779
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 7:8 - I say G3004 therefore G1161 to the unmarried G22 and G2532 widows, G5503 It is G2076 good G2570 for them G846 if G1437 they abide G3306 even G2504  as G5613 I. G2504
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 7:9 - But G1161 if G1487 they G1467  cannot G3756 contain, G1467 let them marry: G1060 for G1063 it is G2076 better G2909 to marry G1060 than G2228 to burn. G4448
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 7:10 - And G1161 unto the married G1060 I command, G3853 yet not G3756 I, G1473 but G235 the Lord, G2962 Let G5563  not G3361 the wife G1135 depart G5563 from G575 her husband: G435
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 7:11 - But G1161 and G2532 if G1437 she depart, G5563 let her remain G3306 unmarried, G22 or G2228 be reconciled G2644 to her husband: G435 and G2532 let G863  not G3361 the husband G435 put away G863 his wife. G1135
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 7:12 - But G1161 to the rest G3062 speak G3004 I, G1473 not G3756 the Lord: G2962 If any G1536 brother G80 hath G2192 a wife G1135 that believeth not, G571 and G2532 she G846 be pleased G4909 to dwell G3611 with G3326 him, G846 let him G863  not G3361 put G863  her G846 away. G863
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 7:14 - For G1063 the unbelieving G571 husband G435 is sanctified G37 by G1722 the wife, G1135 and G2532 the unbelieving G571 wife G1135 is sanctified G37 by G1722 the husband: G435 else G686 G1893 were G2076 your G5216 children G5043 unclean; G169 but G1161 now G3568 are they G2076 holy. G40
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 7:15 - But G1161 if G1487 the unbelieving G571 depart, G5563 let him depart. G5563 A brother G80 or G2228 a sister G79 is G1402  not G3756 under bondage G1402 in G1722 such G5108 cases: but G1161 God G2316 hath called G2564 us G2248 to G1722 peace. G1515
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 7:25 - Now G1161 concerning G4012 virgins G3933 I have G2192 no G3756 commandment G2003 of the Lord: G2962 yet G1161 I give G1325 my judgment, G1106 as G5613 one that hath obtained mercy G1653 of G5259 the Lord G2962 to be G1511 faithful. G4103
Unchecked Copy Box1Co 7:28 - But G1161 and G2532 if G1437 thou marry, G1060 thou hast G264  not G3756 sinned; G264 and G2532 if G1437 a virgin G3933 marry, G1060 she hath G264  not G3756 sinned. G264 Nevertheless G1161 such G5108 shall have G2192 trouble G2347 in the flesh: G4561 but G1161 I G1473 spare G5339 you. G5216
