So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations; and from David until the exile to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the exile to Babylon until the Messiah, fourteen generations.
“And don’t presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones.
“I tell you that many will come from east and west to share the banquet[fn] with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.
“I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob? He[fn] is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”
“And as for the dead being raised — haven’t you read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the burning bush, how God said to him: I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob?
“Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance. And don’t start saying to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones.
“Satan has bound this woman, a daughter of Abraham, for eighteen years — shouldn’t she be untied from this bondage[fn] on the Sabbath day? ”
“There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth in that place, when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves thrown out.
“One day the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s side.[fn] The rich man also died and was buried.
“And being in torment in Hades, he looked up and saw Abraham a long way off, with Lazarus at his side.
“‘Father Abraham! ’ he called out, ‘Have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this flame! ’
“ ‘Son,’[fn] Abraham said, ‘remember that during your life you received your good things, just as Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here, while you are in agony.
“ ‘No, father Abraham,’ he said. ‘But if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
“Today salvation has come to this house,” Jesus told him, “because he too is a son of Abraham.
“Moses even indicated in the passage about the burning bush that the dead are raised, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.
“We are descendants[fn] of Abraham,” they answered him, “and we have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say, ‘You will become free’? ”
“I know you are descendants of Abraham, but you are trying to kill me because my word has no place among you.
“Our father is Abraham,” they replied.
“If you were Abraham’s children,” Jesus told them, “you would do what Abraham did.
“But now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do this.
Then the Jews said, “Now we know you have a demon. Abraham died and so did the prophets. You say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’
“Are you greater than our father Abraham who died? And the prophets died. Who do you claim to be? ”
“The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our ancestors, has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and denied before Pilate, though he had decided to release him.

“Brothers and fathers,” he replied, “listen: The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he settled in Haran,
“were carried back to Shechem, and were placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.
“As the time was approaching to fulfill the promise that God had made to Abraham, the people flourished and multiplied in Egypt

“Brothers and sisters, children of Abraham’s race, and those among you who fear God, it is to us that the word of this salvation has been sent.
What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found?[fn]
If Abraham was justified[fn] by works, he has something to boast about — but not before God.
For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness.
Is this blessing only for the circumcised, then? Or is it also for the uncircumcised? For we say, Faith was credited to Abraham for righteousness.
And he became the father of the circumcised, who are not only circumcised but who also follow in the footsteps of the faith our father Abraham had while he was still uncircumcised.
For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would inherit the world was not through the law, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.
This is why the promise is by faith, so that it may be according to grace, to guarantee it to all the descendants — not only to the one who is of the law[fn] but also to the one who is of Abraham’s faith. He is the father of us all.
I ask, then, has God rejected his people? Absolutely not! For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin.
Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they the descendants of Abraham? So am I.
