“But I say to you, there were certainly many widows in Israel in Elijah’s days, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months while a great famine came over all the land.

He got into one of the boats, which belonged to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from the land. Then he sat down and was teaching the crowds from the boat.

Then they brought the boats to land, left everything, and followed him.

“But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” ​— ​he told the paralyzed man, “I tell you: Get up, take your stretcher, and go home.”

“But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The river crashed against it, and immediately it collapsed. And the destruction of that house was great.”

“Still other seed fell on good ground; when it grew up, it produced fruit: a hundred times what was sown.” As he said this, he called out, “Let anyone who has ears to hear listen.”

“But the seed in the good ground ​— ​these are the ones who, having heard the word with an honest and good heart, hold on to it and by enduring, produce fruit.

When he got out on land, a demon-possessed man from the town met him. For a long time he had worn no clothes and did not stay in a house but in the tombs.

At that time he[fn] rejoiced in the Holy[fn] Spirit and said, “I praise[fn] you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, because this was your good pleasure.[fn]

“The queen of the south will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and look ​— ​something greater than Solomon is here.

“I came to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already set ablaze!

“Do you think that I came here to bring peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.

“Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why don’t you know how to interpret this present time?

“He told the vineyard worker, ‘Listen, for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it even waste the soil? ’

“It isn’t fit for the soil or for the manure pile; they throw it out. Let anyone who has ears to hear listen.”

“But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of a letter in the law to drop out.

“I tell you that he will swiftly grant them justice. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth? ”

“Woe to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days, for there will be great distress in the land[fn] and wrath against this people.

“Then there will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars; and there will be anguish on the earth among nations bewildered by the roaring of the sea and the waves.

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

“like a trap. For it will come on all who live on the face of the whole earth.

Being in anguish, he prayed more fervently, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.[fn]

It was now about noon,[fn] and darkness came over the whole land[fn] until three,[fn]

So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground.

“Why are you looking for the living among the dead? ” asked the men.
