“And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,

are by no means least among the rulers of Judah:

Because out of you will come a ruler

who will shepherd my people Israel.”

saying, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, because those who intended to kill the child are dead.”

Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,

along the road by the sea, beyond the Jordan,

Galilee of the Gentiles.

“Blessed are the humble,

for they will inherit the earth.

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty?[fn] It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.

“For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter[fn] or one stroke of a letter will pass away from the law until all things are accomplished.

“or by the earth, because it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King.

“Your kingdom come.

Your will be done

on earth as it is in heaven.

“Don’t store up for yourselves treasures[fn] on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.

“But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” ​— ​then he told the paralytic, “Get up, take your stretcher, and go home.”

Then news of this spread throughout that whole area.

But they went out and spread the news about him throughout that whole area.

“Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.

“Aren’t two sparrows sold for a penny?[fn] Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s consent.[fn]

“Don’t assume that I came to bring peace on the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.

“But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”

“For as Jonah was in the belly of the huge fish[fn] three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.

“Other seed fell on rocky ground where it didn’t have much soil, and it grew up quickly since the soil wasn’t deep.

“Still other seed fell on good ground and produced fruit: some a hundred, some sixty, and some thirty times what was sown.

“But the one sown on the good ground ​— ​this is one who hears and understands the word, who does produce fruit and yields: some a hundred, some sixty, some thirty times what was sown.”

Meanwhile, the boat was already some distance[fn] from land,[fn] battered by the waves, because the wind was against them.

When they had crossed over, they came to shore at Gennesaret.

After commanding the crowd to sit down on the ground,

“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will have been bound[fn] in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will have been loosed[fn] in heaven.”

“Yes,” he said.

When he went into the house, Jesus spoke to him first,[fn] “What do you think, Simon? From whom do earthly kings collect tariffs or taxes? From their sons or from strangers? ”[fn]

“Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will have been bound[fn] in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will have been loosed[fn] in heaven.

“Do not call anyone on earth your father, because you have one Father, who is in heaven.

“So all the righteous blood shed on the earth will be charged to you,[fn] from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.

“Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the peoples of the earth[fn] will mourn;[fn] and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

“But the man who had received one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground, and hid his master’s money.

“So I was afraid and went off and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what is yours.’

From noon until three in the afternoon,[fn] darkness came over the whole land.[fn]

Suddenly, the curtain of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth quaked, and the rocks were split.

Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.

“But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” ​— ​he told the paralytic —

Again he began to teach by the sea, and a very large crowd gathered around him. So he got into a boat on the sea and sat down, while the whole crowd was by the sea on the shore.

“Other seed fell on rocky ground where it didn’t have much soil, and it grew up quickly, since the soil wasn’t deep.

“Still other seed fell on good ground and it grew up, producing fruit that increased thirty, sixty, and a hundred times.”

“And those like seed sown on good ground hear the word, welcome it, and produce fruit thirty, sixty, and a hundred times what was sown.”

“The kingdom of God is like this,” he said. “A man scatters seed on the ground.

“The soil produces a crop by itself ​— ​first the blade, then the head, and then the full grain on the head.

“It’s like a mustard seed that, when sown upon the soil, is the smallest of all the seeds on the ground.

Well into the night, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and he was alone on the land.

When they had crossed over, they came to shore at Gennesaret and anchored there.

He commanded the crowd to sit down on the ground. Taking the seven loaves, he gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to his disciples to set before the people. So they served them to the crowd.
