Then God said, “Let there be an expanse between the waters, separating water from water.”
So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above the expanse. And it was so.
Then God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night. They will serve as signs for seasons[fn] and for days and years.

From there Abraham traveled to the region of the Negev and settled between Kadesh and Shur. While he was staying in Gerar,
“My lord, listen to me. Land worth four hundred shekels of silver — what is that between you and me? Bury your dead.”
They replied, “We have clearly seen how the LORD has been with you. We think there should be an oath between two parties — between us and you. Let us make a covenant with you:
He put a three-day journey between himself and Jacob. Jacob, meanwhile, was shepherding the rest of Laban’s flock.
“You’ve searched all my possessions! Have you found anything of yours?[fn] Put it here before my relatives and yours, and let them decide between the two of us.
“Come now, let’s make a covenant, you and I. Let it be a witness between the two of us.”
Then Laban said, “This mound is a witness between you and me today.” Therefore the place was called Galeed
and also Mizpah,[fn] for he said, “May the LORD watch between you and me when we are out of each other’s sight.
“If you mistreat my daughters or take other wives, though no one is with us, understand that God will be a witness between you and me.”
Laban also said to Jacob, “Look at this mound and the marker I have set up between you and me.
“The God of Abraham, and the gods of Nahor — the gods of their father[fn] — will judge between us.” And Jacob swore by the Fear of his father Isaac.
He entrusted them to his slaves as separate herds and said to them, “Go on ahead of me, and leave some distance between the herds.”
They did not realize that Joseph understood them, since there was an interpreter between them.
“The scepter will not depart from Judah
or the staff from between his feet
until he whose right it is comes[fn]
and the obedience of the peoples belongs to him.
