and whistles for them from the ends of the earth.
Look — how quickly and swiftly they come!
On that day
the LORD will whistle to flies
at the farthest streams of the Nile
and to bees in the land of Assyria.
“I will make this city desolate, an object of scorn. Everyone who passes by it will be appalled and scoff because of all its wounds.

All your enemies
open their mouths against you.
They hiss and gnash their teeth,
saying, “We have swallowed her up.
This is the day we have waited for!
We have lived to see it.”
“Those who trade among the peoples
scoff[fn] at you;
you have become an object of horror
and will never exist again.” ’ ”
This is the jubilant city
that lives in security,
that says to herself:
I exist, and there is no one else.
What a desolation she has become,
a place for wild animals to lie down!
Everyone who passes by her
scoffs[fn] and shakes his fist.
