“Resume your journey and go to the hill country of the Amorites and their neighbors in the Arabah, the hill country, the Judean foothills,[fn] the Negev and the sea coast ​— ​to the land of the Canaanites and to Lebanon as far as the great river, the Euphrates River.

“So we bypassed our brothers, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. We turned away from the Arabah road and from Elath and Ezion-geber. We traveled along the road to the Wilderness of Moab.

“The Arabah and Jordan are also borders from Chinnereth[fn] as far as the Sea of the Arabah, the Dead Sea, under the slopes of Pisgah on the east.

and all the Arabah on the east side of the Jordan as far as the Dead Sea below the slopes of Pisgah.

“Aren’t these mountains across the Jordan, beyond the western road in the land of the Canaanites, who live in the Arabah, opposite Gilgal, near the oaks[fn] of Moreh?

Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which faces Jericho, and the LORD showed him all the land: Gilead as far as Dan,

The Israelites wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. Then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses came to an end.

and the water flowing downstream stood still, rising up in a mass that extended as far as[fn] Adam, a city next to Zarethan. The water flowing downstream into the Sea of the Arabah ​— ​the Dead Sea ​— ​was completely cut off, and the people crossed opposite Jericho.

The Israelites struck down the following kings of the land and took possession of their land beyond the Jordan to the east and from the Arnon River to Mount Hermon, including all the Arabah eastward:

the Arabah east of the Sea of Chinnereth[fn] to the Sea of Arabah (that is, the Dead Sea), eastward through Beth-jeshimoth and southward[fn] below the slopes of Pisgah.

the hill country, the Judean foothills,[fn] the Arabah, the slopes, the wilderness, and the Negev ​— ​the lands of the Hethites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites):

These were the portions Moses gave them on the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan east of Jericho.

Then it went north to the slope opposite the Arabah[fn] and proceeded into the plains.[fn]

So they went to Ziph ahead of Saul.

Now David and his men were in the wilderness near Maon in the Arabah south of Jeshimon,

So Abner and his men marched through the Arabah all that night. They crossed the Jordan, marched all morning,[fn] and arrived at Mahanaim.

They had entered the house while Ish-bosheth was lying on his bed in his bedroom and stabbed and killed him. They removed his head, took it, and traveled by way of the Arabah all night.

Like wild donkeys in the wilderness,

the poor go out to their task of foraging for food;

the desert provides nourishment for their children.

I made the desert its home,

and the salty wasteland its dwelling.

Sing to God! Sing praises to his name.

Exalt him who rides on the clouds[fn] ​— ​

his name is the LORD[fn] ​— ​and celebrate before him.

The land mourns and withers;

Lebanon is ashamed and wilted.

Sharon is like a desert;

Bashan and Carmel shake off their leaves.

The wilderness and the dry land will be glad;

the desert will rejoice and blossom like a wildflower.[fn]

Then the lame will leap like a deer,

and the tongue of the mute will sing for joy,

for water will gush in the wilderness,

and streams in the desert;

A voice of one crying out:

Prepare the way of the LORD in the wilderness;

make a straight highway for our God in the desert.

I will plant cedar, acacia, myrtle, and olive trees

in the wilderness.

I will put juniper, elm, and cypress trees together

in the desert,

For the LORD will comfort Zion;

he will comfort all her waste places,

and he will make her wilderness like Eden,

and her desert like the garden of the LORD.

Joy and gladness will be found in her,

thanksgiving and melodious song.

They stopped asking, “Where is the LORD

who brought us from the land of Egypt,

who led us through the wilderness,

through a land of deserts and ravines,

through a land of drought and darkness,[fn]

a land no one traveled through

and where no one lived? ”

Therefore, a lion from the forest will strike them down.

A wolf from arid plains will ravage them.

A leopard stalks their cities.

Anyone who leaves them will be torn to pieces

because their rebellious acts are many,

their unfaithful deeds numerous.

He will be like a juniper in the Arabah;

he cannot see when good comes

but dwells in the parched places in the wilderness,

in a salt land where no one lives.

When King Zedekiah of Judah and all the fighting men saw them, they fled. They left the city at night by way of the king’s garden through the city gate between the two walls. They left along the route to the Arabah.
