Let him not put trust in worthless things, being led astray,
for what he gets in exchange will prove worthless.
Yet God drags away[fn] the mighty by his power;
when he rises up, they have no assurance of life.
If I smiled at them, they couldn’t believe it;
they were thrilled at[fn] the light of my countenance.
Can you trust the wild ox to harvest your grain
and bring it to your threshing floor?
He charges ahead[fn] with trembling rage;
he cannot stand still at the sound of the ram’s horn.
Help, LORD, for no faithful one remains;
the loyal have disappeared from the human race.[fn]
The instruction of the LORD is perfect,
renewing one’s life;
the testimony of the LORD is trustworthy,
making the inexperienced wise.
Love the LORD, all his faithful ones.
The LORD protects the loyal,
but fully repays the arrogant.
Then they would not be like their ancestors,
a stubborn and rebellious generation,
a generation whose heart was not loyal
and whose spirit was not faithful to God.
“I will always preserve my faithful love for him,
and my covenant with him will endure.

“and my servant whom I have chosen,

Kings will be your guardians
and their queens[fn] your nursing mothers.
They will bow down to you
with their faces to the ground
and lick the dust at your feet.
Then you will know that I am the LORD;
those who put their hope in me
will not be put to shame.
Who has believed what we have heard?[fn]
And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
“Pay attention and come to me;
listen, so that you will live.
I will make a permanent covenant with you
on the basis of the faithful kindnesses of David.[fn]
Raise your eyes and look around:
they all gather and come to you;
your sons will come from far away,
and your daughters on the hips of nursing mothers.
Even your brothers — your own father’s family —
even they were treacherous to you;
even they have cried out loudly after you.
Do not have confidence in them,
though they speak well of you.
Why has my pain become unending,
my wound incurable,
refusing to be healed?
You truly have become like a mirage to me —
water that is not reliable.
and warned him, “Don’t you realize that Baalis, king of the Ammonites, has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to kill you? ” But Gedaliah son of Ahikam would not believe them.
