Then Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent on the hill, and Laban with his relatives camped on the same hill of Gilead.
“The enemy said, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil;
My desire shall be satisfied against them;
I will draw my sword, my hand shall dispossess them and drive them out.’

“But it shall come about, if you do not listen to and obey the voice of the LORD your God, being careful to do all His commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today, then all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:
“So all these curses will come on you and pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, because you would not obey the voice of the LORD your God by keeping His commandments and His statutes which He has commanded you.
“Some remove the landmarks;
They [violently] seize and pasture flocks [appropriating land and flocks openly].
“Terrors overtake him like a [suddenly rising] flood;
A windstorm steals him away in the night.
“The sword that reaches him cannot avail,
Nor [does] the spear, the dart, or the javelin.
Let the enemy pursue me and overtake me;
And let him trample my life to the ground
And lay my honor in the dust. Selah.
I pursued my enemies and overtook them;
And I did not turn back until they were consumed.
For innumerable evils have encompassed me;
My sins have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see.
