People throughout all the tribes of Israel were arguing among themselves, saying, “The king rescued us from the grasp of our enemies, and he saved us from the grasp of the Philistines, but now he has fled from the land because of Absalom.
So David said to Abishai, “Sheba son of Bichri will do more harm to us than Absalom. Take your lord’s soldiers and pursue him, or he will find fortified cities and elude us.”[fn]
David spoke the words of this song to the LORD on the day the LORD rescued him from the grasp of all his enemies and from the grasp of Saul.
He rescued me from my powerful enemy
and from those who hated me,
for they were too strong for me.
He frees me from my enemies.
You exalt me above my adversaries;
you rescue me from violent men.
but Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field, defended it, and struck down the Philistines. So the LORD brought about a great victory.
“This is what the king says: ‘Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you; he can’t rescue you from my power.
“Don’t let Hezekiah persuade you to rely on the LORD by saying, “Certainly the LORD will rescue us! This city will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.” ’
“until I come and take you away to a land like your own land — a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey — so that you may live and not die. But don’t listen to Hezekiah when he misleads you, saying, “The LORD will rescue us.”
Has any of the gods of the nations ever rescued his land from the power of the king of Assyria?
Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah?[fn] Have they rescued Samaria from my power?
Who among all the gods of the lands has rescued his land from my power? So will the LORD rescue Jerusalem from my power? ’ ”
“Look, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries: They completely destroyed them. Will you be rescued?
“Did the gods of the nations that my predecessors destroyed rescue them — nations such as Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the Edenites in Telassar?
“I will add fifteen years to your life. I will rescue you and this city from the grasp of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city for my sake and for the sake of my servant David.’ ”
But Eleazar and David[fn] took their stand in the middle of the field and defended it. They killed the Philistines, and the LORD gave them a great victory.
And say, “Save us, God of our salvation;
gather us and rescue us from the nations
so that we may give thanks to your holy name
and rejoice in your praise.
So the LORD’s anger was against Amaziah, and he sent a prophet to him, who said, “Why have you sought a people’s gods that could not rescue their own people from you? ”
“Isn’t Hezekiah misleading you to give you over to death by famine and thirst when he says, “The LORD our God will keep us from the grasp of the king of Assyria”?
“ ‘Don’t you know what I and my predecessors have done to all the peoples of the lands? Have any of the national gods of the lands been able to rescue their land from my power?
“Who among all the gods of these nations that my predecessors completely destroyed was able to rescue his people from my power, that your God should be able to deliver you from my power?
“So now, don’t let Hezekiah deceive you, and don’t let him mislead you like this. Don’t believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to rescue his people from my power or the power of my predecessors. How much less will your God rescue you from my power! ’ ”
He also wrote letters to mock the LORD, the God of Israel, saying against him:
Just like the national gods of the lands that did not rescue their people from my power, so Hezekiah’s God will not rescue his people from my power.
We set out from the Ahava River on the twelfth day of the first month to go to Jerusalem. We were strengthened by our God,[fn] and he kept us from the grasp of the enemy and from ambush along the way.
But as soon as they had relief,
they again did what was evil in your sight.
So you abandoned them to the power of their enemies,
who dominated them.
When they cried out to you again,
you heard from heaven and rescued them
many times in your compassion.
His children are far from safety.
They are crushed at the city gate,
with no one to rescue them.
“even though you know that I am not wicked
and that there is no one who can rescue from your power?
He rescued me from my powerful enemy
and from those who hated me,
for they were too strong for me.
He frees me from my enemies.
You exalt me above my adversaries;
you rescue me from violent men.
Listen closely to me; rescue me quickly.
Be a rock of refuge for me,
a mountain fortress to save me.
The course of my life is in your power;
rescue me from the power of my enemies
and from my persecutors.
A king is not saved by a large army;
a warrior will not be rescued by great strength.
The righteous[fn] cry out, and the LORD hears,
and rescues them from all their troubles.
All my bones will say,
“LORD, who is like you,
rescuing the poor from one too strong for him,
the poor or the needy from one who robs him? ”
“Understand this, you who forget God,
or I will tear you apart,
and there will be no one to rescue you.
