When they were near Jebus and the day was almost gone, the servant said to his master, “Please, why not let us stop at this Jebusite city and spend the night here? ”

“Come on,” he said,[fn] “let’s try to reach one of these places and spend the night in Gibeah or Ramah.”

“although there’s straw and feed for the donkeys, and I have bread and wine for me, my concubine, and the servant[fn] with us. There is nothing we lack.”

The servant answered, “She is the young Moabite woman who returned with Naomi from the territory of Moab.

“See which field they are harvesting, and follow them. Haven’t I ordered the young men not to touch you? When you are thirsty, go and drink from the jars the young men have filled.”

When she got up to gather grain, Boaz ordered his young men, “Let her even gather grain among the bundles, and don’t humiliate her.

Ruth the Moabitess said, “He also told me, ‘Stay with my young men until they have finished all of my harvest.’ ”

When she had weaned him, she took him with her to Shiloh, as well as a three-year-old bull,[fn] half a bushel[fn] of flour, and a clay jar of wine. Though the boy was still young,[fn] she took him to the LORD’s house at Shiloh.

Then they slaughtered the bull and brought the boy to Eli.

“I prayed for this boy, and since the LORD gave me what I asked him for,

or the priests’ share of the sacrifices from the people. When anyone offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged meat fork while the meat was boiling

Even before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the one who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to roast, because he won’t accept boiled meat from you ​— ​only raw.”

So the servants’ sin was very severe in the presence of the LORD, because the men treated the LORD’s offering with contempt.

Samuel served in the LORD’s presence ​— ​this mere boy was dressed in the linen ephod.

The LORD paid attention to Hannah’s need, and she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD.

By contrast, the boy Samuel grew in stature and in favor with the LORD and with people.

Once again, for the third time, the LORD called Samuel. He got up, went to Eli, and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

Then Eli understood that the LORD was calling the boy.

When they came to the land of Zuph, Saul said to the servant who was with him, “Come on, let’s go back, or my father will stop worrying about the donkeys and start worrying about us.”

“Suppose we do go,” Saul said to his servant, “what do we take the man? The food from our packs is gone, and there’s no gift to take to the man of God. What do we have? ”

The servant answered Saul, “Here, I have a little[fn] silver. I’ll give it to the man of God, and he will tell us which way we should go.”

“Good,” Saul replied to his servant. “Come on, let’s go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was.

Samuel took Saul and his servant, brought them to the banquet hall, and gave them a place at the head of the thirty[fn] or so men who had been invited.

As they were going down to the edge of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us, but you stay for a while, and I’ll reveal the word of God to you.” So the servant went on.

Jonathan said to the attendant who carried his weapons, “Come on, let’s cross over to the garrison of these uncircumcised men. Perhaps the LORD will help us. Nothing can keep the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few.”

One of the young men answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is also a valiant man, a warrior, eloquent, handsome, and the LORD is with him.”

When the Philistine looked and saw David, he despised him because he was just a youth, healthy[fn] and handsome.

[fn] When Saul had seen David going out to confront the Philistine, he asked Abner the commander of the army, “Whose son is this youth, Abner? ”

“Your Majesty, as surely as you live, I don’t know,” Abner replied.

Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man? ”

“The son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem,” David answered.

In the morning Jonathan went out to the countryside for the appointed meeting with David. A young servant was with him.

He said to the servant, “Run and find the arrows I’m shooting.” As the servant ran, Jonathan shot an arrow beyond him.

He came to the location of the arrow that Jonathan had shot, but Jonathan called to him and said, “The arrow is beyond you, isn’t it? ”

Then Jonathan called to him, “Hurry up and don’t stop! ” Jonathan’s servant picked up the arrow and returned to his master.

He did not know anything; only Jonathan and David knew the arrangement.

Then Jonathan gave his equipment to the servant who was with him and said, “Go, take it back to the city.”

When the servant had gone, David got up from the south side of the stone Ezel, fell facedown to the ground, and paid homage three times. Then he and Jonathan kissed each other and wept with each other, though David wept more.

The priest told him, “There is no ordinary bread on hand. However, there is consecrated bread, but the young men may eat it[fn] only if they have kept themselves from women.”

David answered him, “I swear that women are being kept from us, as always when I go out to battle. The young men’s bodies[fn] are consecrated even on an ordinary mission, so of course their bodies are consecrated today.”
